With an organization like ours, I'd think it would be prudent to plan for one of these competitions a few years down the line if people were really serious about doing it. Like someone was saying, it would take a while to find a sponsor and a good place to build the thing. Let alone the countless logistical issues, like towing someone mentioned.
Personally, I think if we did this as an awareness thing for our club the car would need to be totally off the hook and definitely should be able to compete with professional builders. I'd think that would take more than 1 year or less of planning and fabrication/building... but what would I know, I don't build cars~ 8)

Look, even if we are gonna enter for 2007, lets get it set now. I am really interested in this. This seems like the perfect learning opportunity for guys like me who dont know jack shit and want some hands on experience. It also seems like a great opportunity for us as a club to get some recognition.

Con some ISAT program/prof into ponying up the $$$. Talk to the Alternative fules lab people and see if they would lend some garage space. paint the fucker purple, slap an ISAT/JMU/MM/AFL sticker on it and head to FL.

I agree. I think there's a concensus that Madison Motorsports wants to enter a GRM 200X challenge. We should start planning now. Ideas, funding, the whole bit. Maybe we could do a *gasp* fundraiser. Good publicity for MM is good publicity for JMU. We CAN do this, we CAN be competitive, we just need to think, plan, discuss, plan, communicate, plan, establish goals, and plan.
But I am 100% for and behind this idea. I think it's kick-ass, and I think we can do it.

OK, Here's an example.
SupraTruck- MK III Supra Turbo w/bhg: < $500. (I've seen more than 5 at 500 or lower)
- 1990 Toyota Pickup: $1500. (Just found one on autotrader at a dealer I know we can do better)
So we're at 2 grand, and we've got a pickup, and all the parts we need to make it turbo. I know for a fact we can get at least 7 probably 800 dollars parting out the Supra not to mention what parts we can pull and sell from the Pickup.
It'd be tight, and a donated Supra Parts Car would make our job even easier, but those are just numbers off the top of my head, and it's less than 2000 dollars. I also know of a 1992 5.0 'stang that needs a clutch for 700 dollars. With 1200 bucks in mods, you can make a mean-ass 5.0. Just needs planning.

Rex is right on, we need to get some talkage going at the meeting about this.

There is a difference between thinking about and actually doing. And you're right...I was not in a position to help get anything ready for 2005. We're talking about a different year and a different competition and even if I still wasn't capable of helping, plenty of people seem to be.
I like the SupraTruck idea. Or boosting Dave's 240. Or a 4 cylinder Mopar machine.
And you know I'm down with the 4g63.
Similar to the SupraTruck would be dropping a 4g63t into a Mighty Max truck. I'm not sure which of those would be easier to do.
I'm not sure if it is in the budget, but boosting a Miata with a t25 would probably result in hot ride.

its on the meeting agenda already, and from the looks of the pong table, you get my vote to paint.

another idea might be the Colt GTi (i think thats the name) its a turbo AWD wagon type thinger with a 4g63 - seems like it would be different enough to stand out, but with a common engine so parts should be relatively cheap. I have some vids of them running in the 11s so they arnt exactly slow either....just another thought to kick around
it would also help to read the past GRMs... a lot of what you might thing of as "a grand idea that nobody would ever think of that would totally rock!" has already been done. not that y'all shouldn't do it again, but just letting you know it'd be wise to learn from the mistakes or fortunes of others.

Turbo colts are 4G61's. That's a 1.6Turbo. They're also enormously expensive. Way more than 2006 dollars for one. Perhaps you could take a colt and put a 4G63 in it, that'd be cheap, but you also have to remember that you have a Drag Strip, an Auto-cross, AND a carshow. The best competitors compete in all of them.
And yes, definitely read up on past grm entries. There is some crazy shit there.

I know most of us like the low displacement scene, but what have past results been from cars like fox body 5.0 Mustangs? Lots of parts, lots of power, can get pretty cheap, are darn near bulletproof, granted they don't handle that well out of the box, but could be made to be competitive. Also, lots in junk yards if we need body pannels to make it look good, yada yada. Just another thought.

Someone could also look for a car at impound/police auctions. I know you can get nice cars for real cheap at those.

not exactly sure on the rules, but they may add fair market value to the car even if bought at auction.

i say we find an old 1980's 5 speed turbo caravan with fake wood on the exterior. we'll gut it, put r comps on it and a boost controller and haul all the shit to the competition in the enourmous space where the back seats were. then we can get a liscense plate for it that says "SHRT BUS", and people will adore us
TurboOmni, i'm sure they cross your path every now and then
