Any MM'ers golf?

How cheap? Dick's recently had the prior gen AdiZero Ones on sale for like $89 I think That is cheap for that shoe.

Callaway makes about some of the cheapest shoes that are halfway decent. Here is an example: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/produ ... 89.4414138
I had a pair of similar Callaways years ago and they were fine until they started to fall apart (literally). But for $60 that's about as cheap as you are going to find golf cleats. My next pair of cleats was a mid-range Nike Air but they were really not good...my feet were sore usually after one round. The AdiZeros were worth it to not feel like my feet and calves were beat up at the end of a round.

You could also play with a set of soccer turf shoes if you had a pair already and wanted to save money. Freddie Couples plays in like boat shoes, so cleats definitely aren't a "have to have" if you want to put the money elsewhere Smile

I just want something other than tennis shoes to play in. I might check out those AdiZeros. Thanks!

Just got back from our annual guy's trip. Stonewall is such a stunning course, it's one of Arnie's signature courses. Apparently he hasn't been back since it was built in 2002 but his brother still comes by regularly.

Warming up yesterday morning:

Unfortunately, we were all really unimpressed with the course this year. Granted, it was the beginning of the season however they pushed the date they punched and sanded the greens up to the day we arrived because the property management company had their international conference while we were there. I guess the company executives didn't want to play on punched greens the day before but would rather have their patrons do it instead. Go figure.
The first day it was rainy and we had to play 9-17 twice while they were working on the front nine. Fortunately we talked up all of the execs at the bar before and got all of our rounds comped for the next day (along with a ton of free drinks for the guys who were drinking).
The course was very green but the fairways and roughs were not cut short enough. There were long patches of grass in the fairway that were as long as the rough, which on a course of that caliber is unacceptable. The rough was like hitting out of an un-mowed backyard which is more preference than anything but several of us lost balls just off of the green over the weekend. It's not hard to cut down the rough about 3/4 of an inch so that it is still challenging but you can actually find your ball when you are right off the edge of the fairway. The greens were really disappointing, for the most part. I think they decided not to punch the front 9 after all the rain we got or something because half of the greens were wet, sandy and filled with holes and the others were perfect. It made it almost impossible to dial in a speed. We finally just decided on the sandy greens to play "it counts within the putter grip rule" because our putts were jumping from left to right off of holes, sand piles, etc.
We had fun anyway, and a couple of my friends went out last night with glow in the dark balls and walked a few holes in the dark. I really like that place and have had some great memories over the years but after dealing with the course in that shape this time of year and the fact that there are so many good courses that are closer...I am going to push hard next year for us to go up to the Greenbrier or over to the Pinehurst area.

Phil and Rory killed it today! We waited around for Phil after his interview

My wife is way better looking than me so I gave her the flag to sign and great success Smile

Phil was really cool, he he was genuinely thankful when I told him that he played a great round today. He took the time to sign a LOT of autographs even though he didn't have to. I also got Ricky Barnes earlier in the day when the crowds were a little lighter. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day and the course was in amazing shape. I can't imagine as a member having that be your home course (QH is an invitation only course....and THEN it still costs you a LOT of money :lolSmile

Masters ticket lottery just opened up for 2015. Like usual i put in for every day along with most of my friends. I got to go last year (company sponsored) but I would absolutely go again if I won the chance to buy some @ retail. One of us has to hit it one year!

Very cool! I need to get back out there. Haven't been to an event since Greg Norman was defending his TPC Avenel title. I think my boys will lose their shit when they see how the pros hit the ball.

That course you played with your buddies looks incredible, the mountain - lake setting is beautiful. That stinks on the conditions. I used to to work in the pro shop at Bryce and always felt bad when aerating fell in the middle of a groups outing.

Played a round today with one of my friends / clients and am feeling a lot better about my game. We played here:
Emerald Lake, decent muni golf course that I never even knew was back there! Greens were stupid fast and the fairways were really hard. I mostly have my driver figured out and measured one 300+ drive and several 280s (with some serious help from country club roll). My short game still struggles so much. I switched from using my sand wedge (56*) to chipping with my PW and that seemed to help a lot. Switching to the chunky putter grip also helped, so if I can get my play better around the greens I can hit my goal of shooting consistently in the mid to low 80s. Right now I'm more consistently low 90s (with no mulligans, etc.)

Oh, and:

Shot something in the high 90s with my dad at the beginning of summer. I was pretty disappointed so I spent some time at the range and shot 84 a few weeks ago. I don't think I'll ever be consistent 70s low 80s again so it felt really good. While at Hilton Head, went out with a coworker who was there with his family and shot high 90s again.

Fuck this game.

Also, can't wait to get out there again.

Short game is in the shitter so I pulled out my old Dave Pelz Short Game Bible from the basement. Found two things, a note to an old "girlfriend" and my hole-in-one scorecard on a day I shot 78. It all made sense really.

My boys are 10 and 11 and they've had lessons and we play in spurts so we've hit up the local par 3 course a few times and I'm getting dialed in from 120 and less out. I plan to spend some quality time around a chipping green this month and get that feel back. It's atrocious right now.

I found a TV series called "The Short Game" just messing around in the on-demand section. I think it was originally a Netflix / US Kids Golf venture. These kids are pretty amazing! And some of the dads are straight up assholes. If you're into golf, try to find it and catch an episode or two. They follow eight families preparing their 7 and 8 yr olds for the World Championships. These kids have incredible swings and pretty damn good short games. It gets into the nitty-gritty hardcore life of struggling young athletes looking to find a way out of the tough life of country clubs and private lessons.

Nice man, mid 80s is respectable and that's about as good as I can ever shoot with the amount of golf I can play now. More consistently in the low 90s now playing on tougher courses and a lot of that has to do with my short game right now. I picked up a new chipping motion after playing a round with a random Asian Tiger Woods that has helped a lot.

I picked this gem up a few months back after a trip to Golfsmith. Can't believe someone would give this beauty up, not a single scratch or ding on it...I got it for a steal at $162. I wasn't even in the market for a new putter but I couldn't say no...if I didn't like it I knew I could flip it for +$

Next official round I will be playing is in September at the Coeur d'Alene course while at a conference there. It has a floating island green that you have to take a boat to, which is pretty cool:

This time of year is tough for me to get practice rounds in because it is so dang hot and it rains a lot in the afternoons here. My usual cutoff is if it's over 90* (or under 50*) I won't play. And most of the last few weeks have been 95-100+

A good round of golf is less than 100 for me. I am just getting into it this year after buying a set of clubs over the off-season. Have probably played around 4-5 rounds this summer.

Did you guys take lessons or just continue to practice. I really think consistency is needed, and I need to go to the driving range more. I hit some spectacular shots, and then some others that are shameful. I am getting better round by round, and I have played 2 of those rounds with Jess' Mother-in-Law that plays in tournaments. This also keeps my score-keeping very honest as she is 100% to the rules. The "in the woods and water" off the tee shots probably contribute a majority to the high score. It helped when I started using irons a bit more to control, and I didn't lose much distance.

Most people just learn from their friends who are better than them. You can learn a lot by looking at what works and trying to imitate it. That'll only get you so far, however.

I haven't played a round since April and I'm sure that has absolutely destroyed any bit of the game I had. My choice was a car, or golf this summer. I chose the former. Last round I played was at the golf course by Harrisonburg Highs School. It's owned by the city so the rates are insanely cheap. I think I paid $17 to ride 18. It's also very well taken care of, but the course itself is kind of boring and flat. It's very open so if you have a terrible slice or something, you won't lose that many balls.

DJ I definitely recommend lessons as golf is almost entirely technique. You could be doing more harm than good by practicing poor motions. So yeah, invest in lessons and then practice and play a lot! I will say that some lessons can also throw you off depending on how good the teacher is, so make sure you pony up for a good pro. Don't stress about the high scores now as you are learning, a lot of that is from lost balls (and that will still happen when you get better  )

Also very helpful: were your clubs custom fitted to you? That makes a massive difference, probably 4-5 strokes off of your game as you progress and it will speed up your learning process. Most places where you buy your clubs from will fit for free.
