DJ - my dumbass bought drawer liners for my HF toolbox, but it came with them already. So I have a good amount of extra ones in the packaging.

So, I'm pretty hard on tools. Thus, I like having lifetime warranties at places that will take them back for any reason. Hence, why I bought myself a 250pc kobalt kit from lowe's for one hunnerd dolla. I worked there for 2 years. They'll take back anything, no questions asked. Oh? You slightly knicked 1 socket out of 250? HERE'S ALL YOUR MONEY BACK.

I've enjoyed the kobalt stuff. It's not matco or cornwell, but for my purposes it does just fine.

Okay, so I need socket strips to organize all my loose sockets. Anyone have recommendations?

I tried the metal ones, and they werent too bad. The plastic ones absolutely suck. I strayed away from using them a long time ago when the sockets would just pop off the strips, became more of a pain than they were worth. With the tool cabinets though, having them would be very much advantageous.

Hansen holders are awesome, especially if your sockets don’t have the sizes etched in enormous font. I use KD rails too for misc stuff but I definitely prefer the Hansen holders to rails, and the HF rails blow IMO so skip those. The tolerances are way too tight which make them hard to use. Earnst makes spring ball style holders that have good reviews too.

For wrenches I use Earnst holders which can be cut and arranged so you can have one set of wrenches going small to large and the other going large to small in one drawer to save space which you can't really do with the wrench rack type holders.

HF metal clips for me too. cheap, do what they are supposed to do.

I use the craftsman (because i got them on super sale) metal strips. I like them because i can just grab the stick and crawl under the car or whatever. if you are going to use the cart like a cart is intended to be used... you might as well use what Evan has. it will only suck when you have to swap sockets under the car.

I HATE being wrong by 1mm on the size of the socket, under the car, having to crawl out, walk across the garage (you should eliminate this step with the cart), grab the new one, then walk back and crawl under it again. this could be why i'm lazy and fat.

Also, would those hold up to the kart being pushed into a trailer, strapped down and taking trips to VIR/Summit? I am not exactly known for being nice when trailering and I wouldnt want half my damn tools all over the place vs. strips. Opinions?

Do you not know every bolt size on an e36 by heart by now?

I'd imagine the tool cart has locking casters? Maybe just put some eyebolts into trailer wall and then run tie downs to keep it secured?

My trailer already has mounting points for securing down the tool cart, but I am worried about the movement jumbling my tools.

Oh I forgot to update.

I picked up that harbor freight cart for $99 and also picked up some socket strips and finally got to organizing one of my sets of loose sockets...


The cart is nice, comes with pretty cheap drawer liners, but thats an easy problem to solve. I like the holes in the box for having miscellaneous screwdrivers/pry bars etc. Need to pack this as my "shit my race car just broke" kart. So will most likely have pads/rotors/wheel studs/tie rods/etc in the bottom.
