another cool/weird fact about the MRS is that its a spaceframe. literally every panel bolts on/off, there's not a typical unibody with panels built in.
they're so light, and the engine is straight out of a corolla so they get like 38mpg on the highway.
there is NO storage in them. if all you're doing is driving to work or doing fun drives its fine, but the trunk is basically your passenger seat.
just a weird, cool car that everybody shat on for a while because the 2nd gens are gorgeous and turbo'd and this one wasn't.

I love Toyotas but I can't get behind the looks for these. Though they are super cool.

Wait wat? Sapceframe. I need to do some more research on these MR2's and Z4's.
Corolla engine? 1.8L I'm assuming? I'll look at up. I know it's a 1ZZ that's about it.
Yeah, there is not storage really in any of the other cars either  . That's what the truck is for
I can't say I agree in the look department then again I like the looks of a 2nd gen Mazda3 a lot and most people hate them
rherold9 Wrote:Wait wat? Spaceframe.
every panel comes off. its not like a typical unibody where the rear fenders are integrated.

yerp. nothing remarkable, just super reliable and enough power to be quick in a 2200lb car. you know about the disintegrating cat issue, and they are prone to spin bearings on super grippy tires because the oil pan was designed for a corolla being driven by grandma. there are upgraded baffled pans though.
the 1ZZ is what most people add turbos to, i guess because of lower compression and longer geared 5 speed. 2ZZ/6 speed swap for the big N/A power and budget-lotus-elise experience. 2ZZ swap ftw.
oh wait, we're talking daily driver. sorry

i think they look cool, but not pretty. visibility is probably amazing with that low hood though. its definitely a car you'll never mistake for something else, which is worth respecting.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I'm assuming they did that for weight or?
The MRS motor is the 1ZZ that was shared with the Corolla XRS and the Matrix XRS, so it's not the plebian Corolla motor, but was in some of 'em. Same revrevrevLIFTHITALLTHEPOWEhurghhh powerband experience that the XRS twins have (have you had a ride in Aaron's pace cars? the power band is comical, in a good way) but the only letdown IMO is that they make all their power in such a narrow part of the 'band. Allegedly if you flat-foot it and shift right at redline, it keeps the motor "in lift" gear after gear.
Only real issue, as Scotty said, is the need for a baffled oil pan. $500ish when I last talked to Aaron about it. They seem to be reliable otherwise.

TIL: There are not many Z4's and MR2's in manual within 200 miles for the years I'm looking at. Those will be the harder finds.
Seriously, if you have friends that are willing to let me drive their car (MR2 or Z4) send me their info. I'm willing to drive an hour or two to test drive it before I make a long distance commitment elsewhere.

Oh I know. I'm just saying to test drive so I don't have to deal with the dealer bs. There is a 3.0si in Richmond but they are wanting over market selling value with 90k miles for on 07'. So, don't even want to bother going there. And there is 2000 MR2 in Fredericksburg... Just don't want to have to waste the dealers or my time if I don't have to
Jake Wrote:The MRS motor is the 1ZZ that was shared with the Corolla XRS and the Matrix XRS
no, the 1ZZ in the MRS is no-lift, 140hp. out of the plebian corolla.
the 2ZZ came in the XRS twins, celica GTS, and lotus elise, 190hp and many braaaaps. its a popular swap and you can get a tune for it to drop the cam lift threshold so it stays in lift when you shift.

Is it worth it to have an inspection done by someone like mid-atlantic motorwerks in hburg? (Currently looking at Jake's offering) It has 140k miles where most miles where 80k highway miles were put on it by the last owner. Serviced at a BMW dealership and put on Carfax. Although there has been all the basic maintenance besides the recommended 02 change by BMW there has been nothing major done like cooling system, pump, etc...
No leaks according to current owner and very little rust. Don't know how without replacing the gaskets. Good price but high mileage. Just worried about buying it then having to replace water pump/02 sensor right off the bat, and gaskets leak. I guess I can't think like that?

Which was on your list for a convertible.. So do that
Edit: also, strangely, one of the few cars I think legitimately looks better with a body kit
It's up to you about the PPI but I worked at Mid Atlantic during college so I'll add my 2 cents. They are the only BMW shop in the burg so prices aren't low. But the staff there is very knowledgeable. Ask for Jason to perform the inspection is he still works there. He knows his shit.

I know it's usually $100 for a decent PPI. Do you know the price it was two years ago? If you can disclose that

Not sure. I didn't deal with any when I was there. Most people have Greg source a car for them at auction.
