No, you just seem terribly defensive and proud of what I would call a fairly normal college experience.

It's probably not normal, but it definitely does help. I know I have not had a summer off since I was 12 - worked as an off the books referee until I got my papers then worked as a camp counselor. In my summers during college I worked internships in NYC at several different firms and stayed in contact with all of my managers and contacts from those.

The biggest thing however is the circumstances which you refuse to acknowledge. My brother and I had the exact same upbringing, same exact drive and grades. Hell, we graduated from the same university and with the same major and degree. He graduated 5 years before me - he found a job in a heartbeat. To your point about "who you know" despite having the same contacts, some leads he provided me, I got the same answer, "sorry, we just aren't hiring now." The job market in the those years (2006 versus 2011) was VERY different. You can try and argue that you just did not things differently but, sorry, you didn't. You're not that special, you're effort you did then would have yielded less when we graduated.

Mikey, I can't speak to the rest of our generation but I know I had my first job out of college secured because I worked my butt off in high school and college to network and work at the ground level in the real estate business. When all of my other friends were going off to Mexico on spring breaks or being lazy and getting hammered at the local bars all day during Christmas breaks I was putting hours in at home, selling houses, learning that business and making myself an asset to the sales managers. I had a pick of companies I could work for as soon as I graduated not necessarily because the job market was easier but because I did what it took to make a name for myself despite a fairly limited level of experience. One thing that has been a generational constant, a lot in life is about who you know. Which can be fortunate or unfortunate depending on your ability to network and how hard you are willing to push yourself.

I WISH I had the opportunity to do that. You know a lot of people work full time during college just to be able to pay rent and buy food, not just to network and secure a job after college.

I suppose that's fair, you can just harp on a rushed post on a internet forum. I actually do agree we should type just the same way we do anywhere else, but I'm actually slammed at work but really wanted to respond to this.

When you're not rushed, if you read back you will see that I didn't fail to acknowledge the job climate back in early 2006 was better than it was when you newbies graduated. Frankly the point you are bringing up here is purely conjecture and has no basis in fact. If I graduated in 2011, moved into this area and went into real estate, I would wager that the outcome would have been the same. We took a small hit comparatively to the DC market in 2008-2009, but sales agents here have been killing it for years especially in the foreclosures / short sales business. For some occupations in the US right now, the climate is actually far better now than it used to be. This piece particularly is what I do for a living, so I would be glad to back that up if you need to see labor market data.

So yeah a lot of it depends on what you do, or are willing to do for a living :thumbup:
