The Daytona Project
Oh, I remember what I was going to ask. I may have missed this, but how are you tuning it? What kind of EM are you using and who will be doing the tuning... you?

Definately paint it orange. And I'd also suggest taking that bracket off again and getting it shined up. A quick sandblast and some paint will not take too much time and now's the time to do it. Seems a shame to ruin a freshly painted car and a freshly built engine wiht a rusty bracket ;-).

Its funny you should mention that pete. I had forgotten where that piece went until I ws putting the alternator bracket back on and there was about a 3 in gap between it and the block. To make it worse I could only find one of the bolts so I found that I could and cut about an inch off it (I think that will bite me in the ass later). I just grabbed it, wited the scum off of it and stuck it on. I'll tape the engine off and paint it today  Most of the black...if you get really close...does not look that nice. The block and oil pan look great. But when it comes to brakets and mounts, most were not sanded too well. I don't have a sand/bead blaster and sylvia gets lazy with the sandpaper pretty quick.

As for the engine manangement. I really don't knwo yet. These cars respond very well fo FAST and Megasquirt, but I want a car that runs even when it is cold out! So I have elected to go with a pre-programmed ECU w/ electric boost control and then gratuate to manual b/c once I get the engine broken in. The big question now is who's computer will I use? TurbosUnleashed just anounced that they are once again behind on the orders and won't be taking new orders until september. That is a problem for me because they are my chosen vendor. I can't get Chris to get me bumped to the front of the line. So, that leaves either aftermarket EM (FAST, MS) or FWD Performance's computers. The problem with them is they make theirs as generic "Stages." The same computer is intended to run a t4 turbo or a stock T2 (garret T3 turbo), at a certain boost pressure. Basically it runs the +40% injectors and makes the car idle, raises the boost cutout and possible boost (max on a 2bar is 14.4psi) the rest is up to how well you know how to monkey the car around manualy. I really want a TU computer, they custom make them to your application.

Anyways, thanks agian for lookin guys!!!11!!1!!

Jeff, take a look into an 034 motorsports standalone. they are said to be excellent and quite a bargain. now i know standalone isn't the easiest solution, but given that there will be a dyno in town soon (owned by the guy from tech with the Z06...can't remember his name) you may have some solid tuning possibilites.

Glad to see the reassembly coming along Jeff. Tell Chris to get out of his moms basement and make you a computer so you can finish the project

Forgot to mention 3in highflow cat. I know, I'm a pussy. I couldn't just run it without one...I'm afraid of the LAAWW(thick southern accent) coming down on me. I know they will for noise anyway...but maybe it will help that too.

well it's not like you're losing a ton of power with a cat that big. unless you're racing all the time it's definitely a better way to go.

weld flanges to the end (if they aren't already) and cut yourself a peice of 3" pipe with flanges, change them out whenever you please/inspection time
Where is a cheap place to get them? Do they seal well?

not bad j-dawg. that's one funky looking manifold, but those ports are a big improvement over stock. that's worth at least the horsepower of a yellow MM sticker!

Jeff,

I've always heard that it's a bad idea to put the EGT before the turbo. If any piece of it breaks off it will destroy the turbine wheel. What's your take on that?

I'll give you the stock answer we'd give our customers when they asked us that when I was at Geno's Garage (TD truck place). And that's that if the probe is rated properly, if it gets hot enough to break down and come apart, your engine is done anyway. In our case, 2000 deg probes were more than enough for a TD that shouldn't be over 1300 for very long, with serious drag trucks getting above 1500 during a run, (just short of exploding) but that was it. I think they've been in biz for 10 years, and had never heard of one coming apart... I'm sure it's happened to someone, somewhere, but it's just more of an urban legend.

I don't know if 2000 is sufficiently safe for gas, but maybe there's something rated higher? BTW, you're only going to be reading that one cyl temp, but I'm sure you knew that.
