Official MM Firearms Thread
ScottyB Wrote:good call on the actual vs. realistic contents capability. figured that was probably the case.

we're looking to get into a 9mm this year and will likely inherit some revolvers in the next couple years after that, which we'll definitely keep and want to fire often. i doubt we'd end up with anything more than 3 or 4 long guns depending on how much skeet we want to shoot and whether i catch the AR disease.
TSC was a good call, here is an 18 gun if you don't feel like you're going to buy more than a couple of long guns:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/winchester-18-gun-granite-safe-with-ul-electronic-lock?cm_vc=-10005">http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... _vc=-10005</a><!-- m -->

My buddy just bought this one, but I'm pretty sure he spent about $100 less than that:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/winchester-26-gun-granite-safe-with-lighted-ul-electronic-lock?cm_vc=IOPDP1">http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... _vc=IOPDP1</a><!-- m -->

You might want to also consider a biometric / punch code finger safe for your 9mm if you plan to use it for home defense. It's not too realistic to have to run to your big safe to grab your piece in a break-in situation. Something like this:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/stack-on-quick-access-safe-with-electronic-lock?cm_vc=-10005">http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... _vc=-10005</a><!-- m -->
Or this (I think this is the one we have):
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.gunvault.com/gv1000c-dlx.html">http://www.gunvault.com/gv1000c-dlx.html</a><!-- m -->

I got mine from TSC, it looks like the Winchester 24 gun, but it's...a Cannon? I think. I dunno.

Other cool thing about some of these safes (like mine) is they have ethernet, power, and usb connectors to the outside. Drop a external hard drive in the safe, push your data to it, ta-da! You're fire free.

Yeah there are some seriously cool features. Also look into some kind of dehumidifier system. I bought two rechargeable EvaDrys, one is the regular and one is the high capacity (seen here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/eva-dry-e-500-renewable-mini-dehumidifier/1043630059?skuId=43630059&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_cleaning_&adpos=1o2&creative=43742649229&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAiA5Ji0BRC5huTCyOTR3wISJACH4Bx4V7TluHnwjAxB4i0PujlqvO-GuIGSCg6Gsx9kY9puLBoCQULw_wcB">http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/p ... oCQULw_wcB</a><!-- m -->). If I had to do it again I would have bought two high capacity units; during the summer months I have to pull them out every week and a half or so, a little bit longer in the winter. If you have plugs in yours there are units you can plug in inside the safe but I haven't bothered to hook up power to mine (my safe came "plumbed" for cable / power inputs but didn't actually come with the plugs).

For lighting, I bought a couple of cheap motion sensitive LED lights and stuck them around the inside with the velcro side of Command strips...they stick nice to the carpeting inside and work fine vs. a more expensive setup. You could also look at a hanging door panel / organizer, a lot of safes include these as a "throw in" accessory and they are super nice for storing more handguns / stuff. This is the one I have:

The last thing I recommend are gun socks, they will help protect your guns inside the safe if there ever is actually a fire. They aren't expensive and you can get them at any gun / outdoors store

so what are yalls thoughts on a large gunsafe location....

Potential new house has an attached garage, blinds on the windows to keep it from easily being spotted, bolt it to the concrete floor, good to go? or no?
There really isn't anywhere on the first level to store it inside, and I doubt I want to drag a 500lb safe up 2 flights of stairs to store in my closet.

FN and Shield will be in my nightstand safe.

If you don't have a place for it inside the house the garage is fine. It also makes it easier to deliver. Definitely bolt it to the floor with big lag bolts after you place it where you want it. Also, keep it covered with big packing blankets or something else to keep it out of the public's eye....think about when you open and close your garage door, you don't want anyone peeking inside and seeing an obvious safe standing there.

If you keep it in the garage, you may need to be more diligent about the dehumidifiers because it gets more hot and humid out there. You may need to take them out more frequently than you would inside the house, potentially every week and a half or so during the summer months depending on how big they are.

Mine is in my basement. I personally wouldn't want mine in my garage because it's visible every time you open the garage door.

If you don't want to hike it up the stairs, just pay some guys from the Home Depot parking lot to do it for you. :lol:

Basement is money if you have one, especially an unfinished area. If you ever decide to finish it off you can build some built-in bookcases around it or something similar.

I don't know if his new house will be on a slab or not though

FWIW, mine was in my 3rd floor bedroom closet back in VA. I just borrowed a handtruck and got a friend to help out.

You're a better man than I, I just paid some guy with a fancy heavy-item dolly like $100 to do it

I know some places offer "whiteglove" delivery, depending on the cost that may be an option.

They do, it's usually in the $250-$300 range for a safe of average size from what I remember. If you can find a "guy" that specializes in safe / heavy item removal you can get it done for much cheaper. The "guy" I found had this dolly machine that was designed to lift safes even 3-4x bigger than mine and maneuver them super easy into very tight spaces. He also specialized in moving expensive heavy furniture (grand pianos, etc.). Pretty cool!

Cool story bro.

You've got the cash for a P30SK anyway, so why are you looking at Shields?

Cause it's easier to impulse buy at half the price
