joking, right? removing a 100 year old connector and saying "you know what, fuck you guys, we're doing it" isn't FORCING technological advancement? kudos to them for having the balls to do it. sure, it'll piss a lot of folks off, but long term it will prove a great... TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT... and i wager you'll be thanking apple for making it happen.

So their technological advancement is using a protocol they didn't invent and removing a port? I can see how it might encourage progress in wireless and battery tech, but it's a leap to say they're forcing technological advancement. I hate wires as much as the next guy (I've always used a dock to charge my phone), but I hate dead batteries more. They would have forced a lot more by requiring wireless charging... there would be wireless pads everywhere in a matter of weeks, including cars, coffee shops, and movie theaters. Now, give me headphones that are kineticly charged by the moving speakers and we're talking.

SlimKlim Wrote:Speaking of headphones, and to break up the iPhone pissing match, anyone have a set of over-the-ears they would recommend?

I am rocking a set of ~8 year old Sennheiser HD555s, they are great but I feel like I've started to notice some more "noise" if that's the correct term. Songs that have soft drums or instrumentals in the background sound kind of static-y and the bass isn't as crisp as it used to sound. The plastic frame is starting to crack a little bit too, at some point im gonna put them down too hard and they'll fall apart.

I tried some $250 Beyerdynamics a while ago that completely blew my skirt up. Call that the rough budget. I listen to a shitload of music at work, probably 4+ hours a day, so it's gotta be something that will last and have ideal clarity. I also know some people like to run desktop DACs to get the most quality possible out of a laptop, which I don't know much about but am open to.

Not really planning to buy anything soon, just considering working this angle for my upcoming birthday.
Love my HD598s, but they don't have kick your teeth in bass if that is your thing.

Edit - also, if you are listening in an open office, not a good choice because they are an open design.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

So my current headphones are also open back. I demo'd my co-workers Fiio E17 DAC/AMP with them this morning and the results were frickin unbelievable, and could get so much louder without distortion, so yeah, a closed back setup is probably the way to go. Especially if I ever get stuck working in an "open concept" office.

As far as bass, overall clarity is more important to me than just eye-shaking bass, but a little thump isn't unwelcome with as much rap as I listen to.

Right now I'm leaning towards the BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro 80ohm plus the Fiio E10K DAC+AMP. The only downside is the headphones are tuned for a V sound profile so the mid-range could feel a little muffled, but they have great bass.

You guys know anything about headphone impedance? If I'm going to get a DAC and amp anyway is it better to go for the 250ohm phones? I think they are effectively the same price. I would have to go for a more expensive amp because the E10K caps out at 150ohm.

I just watched this: https://youtu.be/eOgGGxik7J4

I mean, I get Apple people salivate over design but it's amusing the thing they chose to highlight has nothing to do with it actually being a smartphone. I think that highlights just how much "technological enhancement" there is.

I think we all knew the 7 wasn't going to be a major upgrade. Hopefully the next one they do is.

yes!

chris, i'm with you... i don't know why more shit doesn't have kinetic charging. it's a pretty straightforward thing, no? put it in my damned bike gps. put it in all the watches. put it in phones.

why hasn't this happened?

wireless charging? meh. doesn't appeal to me to have charging pads all over the place. when they can figure out how to make my entire house a charger, i'm all for it and the guaranteed brain tumors.

You just proved the meme.

I think there's some truth in it. Whenever a new iPhone comes out, everyone that makes not using an iPhone part of their identity runs around screaming about how awful it is and how Apple is fucking everyone, and you'd need to be lobotomized to be stupid enough to buy it. Nothing happens when a new Android phone comes out because the people that want it buy it and the people that don't don't give a shit.

People just take this shit too seriously. We revert to our tribal behavior when we have to commit a few hundred bucks this, that or the other thing and live with it for a couple years. It becomes natural to violently defend and argue your choice, it's the same as the console wars.

Because it doesn't matter if any single android phone has the particular features you want, you can just buy a different one and still have all of your apps, message history, familiar os, etc. When apple does something stupid there isn't another choice without switching to a completely different OS, apps, chargers, etc.

I'm not making it part of my identity. I don't really give a shit about android vs apple. I'm just annoyed that I have to switch everything up because of a stupid design decision.

Ultimately, it's my fault for buying an apple product way back when I got my first smart phone, but android touch screens sucked back then.

I think the reason non-iphone users like to give the iphone shit is because there's been a decade of "ZOMG MY PHONE IS SO GREAT." There's no doubt Apple changed the smartphone market and the world with the iphone, but they're no longer leaps and bounds ahead of Google and Samsung. I personally believe Samsung and Apple are on par these days and it's a highly personal choice. That didn't used to be the case, so it's fun to point that out to iphone fanbois.
