Yeah, our out of pocket for healthcare is 1/3 our childcare/education costs. Elementary school will be a welcome change, but we've kicked around the idea of private school. Even if we don't, there's that whole college thing hanging out there right about when I'm approaching retirement age. Healthcare for retirees is pretty terrible right now, but I do think healthcare is set to be disrupted. If not in the next few years, at least by the time we're talking retirement. Non-traditional players are starting to really pay attention, so hopefully competition disrupts the market.

we had ours in private school/afternoon daycare from young-3's to pre-K. it was a wonderful experience and we think it did nothing but good things for his development as a person and academically.

that said, it was unsustainably freakin expensive and he'll be starting kindergarten at our local public school. if i could do it again i would, no questions, but i daydream about buyin boats 'n stuff with the amount of $$$ we'll have back in our pockets every month.

Our kid is in a co-op preschool, which helps keeps costs down because parents participate (i.e. I'm the schools webmaster). At his current age, you have to be at school with him, but he'll eventually get to flying solo right around the time when your kid started. We also use daycare at the school, which provides the same structure/environment/teachers to aid in development. We also have a nanny a few days a week so he gets enrichment there too. Those first five years are pretty critical, so I don't mind spending the money right now. Seattle public schools are very hit or miss, depending on the school. We're in a decent neighborhood, but it's also pretty common to send kids to speciality private schools (e.g. one that's heavily STEM). All have the annual cost of a small car. #firstworldproblems

P.S. - We missed the school year cutoff by four days. We're not going to move him up because most everything suggests it's better for kids to be older, but that means an extra year of childcare.

Until you're retired, and you're paying the full boat for that healthcare.... $1200-1500/mo isnt uncommon.

agreed, that's how we've seen it too. ours did the same general structure...."class" then daycare in the afternoon with the same teacher. it was amazing to see what it did for his drive to read/make friends/develop his manners further.

the co-op school sounds like a great concept. i wish we had something like that here.

anyway, back to finance stuff. thanks to this thread i looked back over my Roth account and moved some of my assets into a better fund, was long overdue. :thumbup:

Even paying $1200-1500/month for healthcare I'd be spending a lot less than I do now on childcare and skool.  Maybe I should put the savings from not paying childcare in a few years towards retiring early rather than burning it on car/bike shit.

Yeah hence the "retirement cost" is going to be equal to your children's education.  My grandmother's was more than $1600/month.  Basically swap your mortgage for your health insurance.  #fuckitjustgoingtodieat65.

Yes, less, but not 4x. Of course in theory you dont have a house note and/or live in a lower COL area to offset.

I don't think that's a good idea. I'm expecting you to get an NSX in the near future so we can all live vicariously through you.

NSX resale value got torpedoed cause Acura put $30k on the hood to move 2017's sitting at dealerships (I actually talked to an Acura VP about that whole deal).  So an NSX is closer to possible than before.  But now I feel a little more lukewarm on them.  GT3 or GT4 are more likely options at this point.  Wish I had put down a deposit on the 718 GT4 like a year ago, by now I don't think I can get one without paying a markup.

Anyway, I really should invest the savings from childcare in a few years, tempting to blow the money on stupid shit but I should at least put lion's share towards investment.

Insurance was $2k/ mo when we were on Obamacare.

My daughter just finished her first year of private school. It is an amazing school and fantastic learning community and the public schools here are horrible. Ill gladly pay it for her and her brother when he gets to that age.

I dont particularly care about the money, I dont need to buy more stupid shit I dont need.
