Do you honestly think if I were pulled over an officer would split hairs like you're trying to do? I've had plenty of experience with them, they will not. I'd go to court, the judge would laugh for having his/her time wasted, and I'd be on my way.
I'm not harping to sound like I'm perfect, far from it, and I've already admitted so (took the bike out on my own to meet up with other riders a handful of times). I'm just trying to advise you so as to prevent you from something that could possibly happen that's a greater risk than other questionable acts we've all done. Especially when the fix is such an easy one and such a short time of effort.
