you won't learn heal-toe in HPDE 1, it's considered a more advanced technique.
Try heel-toeing. While your braking you rev match to avoid losing the revs. You want to keep the power available out of a turn and going into a turn you're braking...so you'll want to blip the throttle WHILE you're braking to keep the power there when you down shift. You've heard of rev-matching right? Try doing that. Once you get a feel of how much throttle to give it when switching from gear-to-gear then try using the heel-toe technique. I learned this way on the road and then i applied it to my first track weekend and it came naturally....but having that wide gas pedal is essential IMO, it's difficult with a skinnier one.
