how about this:

you both are right....

definiton of dynamometer: "measures mechanical power" found many places

but the numbers on a dyno don't really matter, only the differences when tuning. No two dyno's will be the same, where the only purpose for a dyno would be to get the maximum output that your engine can achieve. This 'maximum' output is empirical, but the absolute value of that output doesn't matter, just the fact that you have reached the 'maximum'. The top whp and top torque that your car can get is nothing but an unknown variable that a dyno jet will bring you close to knowing. I personally think that the most benefical thing you can get from dyno-ing your car is the power band; knowing where your car makes the most power.

Did i get that right after reading all that?
