I'm not an expert, but I subscribe to the idea that they best way to ensure no collateral damage is to hit your target. It has far more influence on result than the difference between caliber. I prioritized mobility, maneuverability, magazine size (e.g. no shotguns), and comfort in my home defense purchase.
