Really all Blizzard had to do in the first place was ignore the problem and it would have died down on its own. But you go out and ban a pro-player and claw back his winnings for being pro Hong Kong and now you've created a needless firestorm.
Majority of players don't care, but it only takes a small number of people to create another incident that will anger China, and in turn put pressure on Blizzard to do something heavy-handed and dumb.
