The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread!

You don't use the "delete key" because that is akin to "backspace" on a Windows box and that key also does not delete a file. Windows lets you use the forward delete key, which doesn't exist on Apple laptops and didn't exist on various Mac desktop keyboards over the years. I think they went for a standard experience instead of a "oh if you have this key, use it."

All of you who grump about how hard and difficult Apple products are to use, but are in the technology world, really mystify me. If you're a professional, shouldn't you be adept at both OS's and be able to use either without complaint? I'm just as fast/keyboard-shortcut-y on a Mac as I am on a Windows box. Neither is hard to use at this point.

I understand the concept, but the fact you have to explain it is the problem. Things should be intuitive and users expect a delete key to delete things.

Technology isn't the same thing as IT. Why would I need to be familiar with both OS when I've lived in the analytics and ops worlds? It's not like I'm doing tech support. Like Lee, all of the Data Scientists, Economists, and Analysts that reported to me used Windows. The reason is because Mac just doesn't work as well with the Enterprise tools they need to do their job.

Outlook for Mac fucking sucks. I know this is MSFT's fault, but there are so many things (with Outlook and other programs) that people assume I have the ability to do that I simply don't. The reason I chose a Mac at work years ago is because the battery life, SSD, and our windows machines at the time had max resolution of 1024 vs. the Retina I have. If I was still doing analysis for my job, like I was my first few years at Amazon, I would most definitely NOT have moved to Mac. Unfortunately, most Windows laptop hardware these days are junk so Dell and Lenovo are non-starters for me. I get why people like the Apple hardware and curated ecosystem... it's just not for me in my personal life - I use an Alienware that has been trouble free for years and works seamlessly with all my shit, regardless of who manufactured it.

FWIW, Google uses Chromebooks as their standard issue enterprise laptop.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
