I'm a little concerned about him adapting to either one with him in Florida and me up here, I will have limited time to get him adapted during the holidays and I am not familiar with either platform to try and walk him through things over the phone.

Windows 10 can be switched between the tablet friendly tile mode or the more conventional Windows 7 mode.
I use TeamViewer to help out family, if you need something like that. Easy way to remote in and help out, rather than super frustrating phone calls.
