I'm trying to think of how I drive but I can't recall ever going directly from 6 all the way to 3rd gear. Seems like quite the jump...or is this normal and I just do it without thinking?

6-5 is pointless and this thing revs so low at speed that shifting into 4th gear before you're below 50 mph doesn't really slow the car at all. In a higher revving car, I don't think you'd do this, but in the GTI, it's pretty common for me to do. I mean it's taking like 2000 RPM or something stupid low at 60 MPH in 6.
