It takes courage to support a small but growing political movement, especially when you traditionally lean pretty far to the right as I do. Because of how much our society and world has changed, we need more options now for candidates of different political ideologies. Gary Johnson had less than 1% of the popular vote in 2012 and this time around tripled that to 3%. It's important to look toward the long term and not just the next four years; if an Independent candidate can be legitimized at 5%, and they are allowed to take place in the major debates and get press attention, people will finally start to vote how they feel they really want to vote and not feel like they are throwing it away. If that happens, for a good candidate those independent percentages should grow dramatically. The hope is, a President who doesn't lean too far to one side will be able to better work with the Senate and Congress majorities. All of that takes time and takes people stepping up and making the change happen that they want (instead of just talking about it)
