I had a spark issue on my first bike that took forever to troubleshoot, I ended up having to take it to a cycle shop and it still to them a while to figure it out. I dunno how yours is set up, you might want to make sure it's not the plug wire/ignition coil before taking the motor out of the frame. (Although as far as engine removals go, that one should be a walk in the park if it does end up being the magneto.)
If that thing hasn't run in while just go ahead and clean/rebuild the carb. A lot of old carb'd bike engines won't even tolerate sitting for one winter without having to take the damn things apart and de-gunk them. Since that thing is a single cylinder (I assume) you don't have to worry about balancing them, so it's a good way to dip your toe into dealing with carbs.
