Those are being phased out, at least across the pond. When we finally get it here, they will be NFC based. I'm pretty sure they're not RFID because there's some communication that happens between the reader and the card.
Either way, with nothing to scan off the card and the card never leaving your sight, I really hope this will cut down on fraud. I have to get a new card at least once a year, its a giant pain in the ass.
