So why do people have to put the card inside the reader now?

They dont. Its the same technology as apple pay.

Similar at a low level but not the same. Apple Pay is NFC based.
Contactless smart cards/chip&pin/EMV use passive RFID (like a building pass)

but many smart cards/chip&pin/emv still use the contact chip on the front (underlying encryption and tech is still the same)


IMO smart cards/chip&pin/emv is too little too late at this point. they dont do anything for online sales. we will be totally cardless pretty soon, but better late then never i guess.
