while on the topic of wheels, what is gentle on the finish but tough on the brake dust.

I am scared to use regular wheel cleaner on the the Forester's painted wheels.

hmmm, you painted them right? The Sonax should be gentle enough- griots makes a decent otc cleaner- straight up or diluted might be gentle....depends what you sprayed them with. Could always use a really light dilution of APC such as Simple Green etc. 10:1 or even higher
