ATI is a chip designer of graphics cards. Nvidia is a designed of graphics cards. ATI cards are programmed using OpenCL, Nvidia with CUDA (Excluding things like video games). Back in OpenCL's history, Apple has some influence creating the open standard. CUDA is developed by Nvidia, and is also open source. You can't do CUDA programming on an ATI card presently.
Unscientifically, if you google "OpenCL programming" and "cuda programming" you will see that there are 3-4x more hits for cuda programming, which mimcs my real world "I'm a software developer who enjoys programming for GPUs" experience that CUDA is superior for such a use and has more support.
On another note, I do like the idea of the cooling-tower approach to the heat-sink if it works. I also like the onboard PCI controller.
