In the sub-$300 range check out any of the Seiko watches. If you ever make it up to Leesburg, the outlet mall has a Seiko outlet that I have bought several watches from over the years. I still have one of their Kinetic watches (motion-charged) and it has held up really well. Dont remember exactly what I paid but I think it was under $200.
It looks almost exactly like this one. It has a window on the back of the watch that lets you see all of the internals, kind of cool:

I don't own any but Fossil makes some nice affordable watches too.
