Well by what he told me, the water pump destroyed the hole where it sits on its way out which would prevent the new pump from sealing properly, wouldn't it?

That's really hard to define without pics of the carnage.

I'm with the other guys - flush the bitch out and do it over. Sure, it's an expensive mistake (although possibly cheap in the realm of things), but remember that professional mechanics make worse mistakes and you don't need to get so down on yourself.
