Just the ability to run the processor at a faster speed then set from the factory, run apps not currently available in the Amazon Market but available in the Android market. Those are the only two reasons I really see/care about. Ive tried the whole custom rom thing on my phone, but just revert back to a stock rom on my phone due to reliability. I do like overclocking the processor though to speed my phone up or declocking to manage the battery when not in use. Apps arent an issue on my phone, but could be on the Fire.
It wasnt really a I wont buy it if I cant root it statement, more so of a curiousity. I thought the user interface was dumbed down just from pictures ive seen and may have effected the capability. Rooting would obviously give you the stock android screens.
I kinda want one now though after reading reviews. I dont need a camera/GPS/3G, I just want something witha simple interface I can stream movies on and surf the interwebs when traveling, take to the kitchen to view a recipe, check email. Price is nice too.
