It's pretty difficult to use a laptop while standing up, unless you can put it on a flat surface. A tablet you can use in any position you like; standing, sitting down, laying on your back, whatever.
Think of it this way, why would you buy an ultraportable laptop or a netbook? After all, they have less computing power than a power laptop and they only get you marginal gains in portability. They have the same interface devices as a bigger laptop that it some cases makes them a little more difficult to use (smaller keyboard, smaller trackpad).
But with a tablet you do get some mobility you don't get with a netbook or ultraportable, and the touchscreen interface allows you to interact with it in different ways, although it slows down wpm dramatically.
I certainly couldn't use a tablet as my only computing devices unless it was while traveling. But, I program and make artwork on my laptop, someone who didn't have those needs (like my parents) might be able to get away with it.
