My experiences on a stationary bike, flying on a CRJ and backpacking in Toronto disagree. Oh and I charge my tablet once every other day. A lot you can do when you don't have to worry about finding a plug.
I'm not arguing that a tablet isn't somewhat useless. I'm arguing that by buying an "overpriced and underpowered" netbook, I got one that does 95% of what I used my laptop for plus a tablet thrown in. FWIW, I haven't used my laptop since I got it.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
