Old bike parts and forums - Paging RJ? - HAULN-SS - 04-15-2012

I figured RJ would probably be the most help here.

I have two older bikes that I was going to look into getting running again. Where do I start? I have never worked on motorcycles before, much less trying to restore/repair one thats been sitting a logn time.

a 198(something) Yamaha MX100. This was my dirtbike I had as a kid, and last I knew it ran, but it smoked like a MFer (even though some smoke is normal for these).

I started googling for this bike, and I find a few different forums related to dirtbike stuff, and a bunch of youtubes and generic ebay auction links. Know of any specific good resource for dirtbikes, or yamaha dirtbikes? Also, I value the dirtbike probably at around 450-550 dollars. Can you get a bike up and running for less than that? This one has some gunk in the gastank for sure, and turns over, but thats all I know for right now.

Second bike - slightly more interesting. It is my 1973 Aermacchi Harley Davidson Sprint. I have only briefly had it running like 15 years ago, but its actually in pretty good shape, and mostly complete as far as I know. I'd like to restore this one to original, but not sure where to start, again.

I dont know anything specific for those bikes.... but you will have a hard time getting your money back out of the dirt bike after getting it running and riding again. I wouldnt bother unless you just want a pit/farm bike to scoot around on.

I dont know anything about the italian harley...

http://www.partspitstoponline.com for older bikes, OEM parts, good prices. Just placed order for my 1980 Yamaha this a.m.

advrider.com and thumpertalk.com may be helpful for your dirt bike and your HD Sprint (cool bike, btw).
