Considering a motorcycle - Ole - 11-14-2011

I asked this somewhere but never did anything...can't find that post so I am starting a new one...

Back when I was in HS (1979) a buddy had a couple bikes. Kawasaki KZ H 400 (2 stroke) and a Suzuki PE250. The latter was my favorite. I could go dirt riding on it or ride back and forth to school. I am looking for something fairly inexpensive that is similar to that Suzuki. I haven't driven for about 10 years now (dirt bike) and don't want anything to radical, just something I can ride to Starbucks or go trail riding...

Tell me what you guys know as I am have been out of the bike scene way too long.

Thanks,
Alan

All the Japanese manufacturers make 250 and 450 single cylinder 4-stroke dual sport bikes - like this -

Thanks for the info. "Dual Sport" stuff everywhere it seems.. Back in the day they were called "Enduro"...

yes!

I ended up in the same place as you. Just around town errands and the ability to go off road.

What I ended up with (how can you not love it, it looks just like what you played with before!):

Others a little higher on my list (and highly recommended in the class) were the Honda CRF250L and the Yamaha XT250, but the suzuki came along locally for the right price. I'm sure they're pretty similar. Mine's comfortable, light, I tried to drive it down the hill behind my house, dumped it and it was fine, I'm really happy with it. Highway... well ok, 65MPH is about all I got. Maybe 70. I avoid highways. I calculated 75mpg last time I filled up.

Wow does that ever bring back memories! I will be watching for something similar to come up for sale.
