BMW Vibration Help - Sully - 07-28-2011
Ok so I just finished replacement of my flex disc (guibo) and center driveshaft support bearing and now I noticed a problem. Now first off, let me say I had a vibration under acceleration but it seemed to get less noticable recentley. So I replaced the parts above and also did a short shifter with the UUC DSSR and new trans mounts. I just noticed today that under acceleration, in second gear between 2,500-3,000rpm I get a vibration from the trans./driveshaft area of the car.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be. The DSSR drops the shifter assembly and clearance between shifter and guibo were close but under acceleration, the trans should flex down, not up towards the shifter. I also replaced the trans fluid with what is suppose to be top of the line swepco stuff that pelican sells. I did push the center support bearing forward while tightening it down as per the instructions. I really do not feel like dropping the exhaust again and wrestling it out and in by myself but will if I really really have to.

Use a torque wrench on the guibo? its well known if you overtight those and the trans mounts (please tell me you replaced these as well), that they will vibrate.

Maybe I over torqued the top of the trans mounts as my torque wrench would not fit...yes replaced trans mounts with rogue engineering mounts. And I torqued the guibo to spec.

How sensitive to over torquing are the trans mounts becasue I feel that I could not have been that far over. I did the lower nuts with a torque wrench and the uppers with an open end and applied a fair but not rediculous amount of force.

How can I has torque specs when torque wrench no fit :dunno: I think I can get to them without dropping the exhaust, maybe lossen them and tighten them a little less and see if it goes away

I will attempt to loosen the trans mounts tomorrow but in the mean time, I had a really bad vibration from the steering wheel today right around 45-50mph and you could here the slop outside the car as well adn it was loud. Does this sound like a steering rack problem. My powersteering is toast for the most part but I get bad vibrations at highway speeds and now today I had one at 50. It almost sounded like my lugs were loose but checked when I got home and they were all good. I would like to say just old front end parts but the ball joints look good and I get no play when I jack it up and try to "shake" the wheels individually.

I was considering that even though they were just done when I had my tires put on. I might go up to the shop tomorrow and call in a favor for a balance and a proper alignment at what is arguably the best front end alignment shop in the area. (According to the body shops I have dealt with) If they can't diagnose the problem, I would be worried. I'm just hoping its nothing too expensive.

Ok so I still have not figured out the driveshaft vibration but have a question for you all about my front end vibration problem. I was reading an M5 owner was having on bimmerforums and thought it may jump across to my platform and could answer some questions.
Now the precursors are that my car just recently had new tires put on and the tech said he balanced, which I can see weights and I trust him on that as well as an alignment which I have no way of knowing.
Either way, I have had a bad vibration on the highway and sometimes at like 50mph as well where the steering wheel just shakes back and forth. The other day when it did it at the lower 50mph speed, I brought it home and pulled a wheel after doing the shake test with the front jacked up and got no play in the steering. The brake rotors were insanley hot although I had not done any high speed braking whatsoever. I understand brakes can heat up but this seemed rediculously hot for the kind of driving I had just finished, and it wasn't a long trip either. I could feel the heat coming off of them. One thing to note is that my car is not running the OEM brake ducts or any for that matter at this time.
But back on track. The problem a memeber on bimmerforums commented that his rotors were warping quickly. I feel as mine are starting to get worse and they are near new. So he said he got warp again after having the rotors trued. Someone said it may be becasue his hubs are not true and therefore he would experience constant vibration as well as premature rotor warp. Now he didn't experience the first but I do so could this be my problem. The casues of hub failure was over torquing and possibly sometihng else that I can't recall.
Could this be the casue of my hot rotors and vibration. What are your guys thoughts on all of this.

Considering it didnt do it before you did the driveshaft work leads me to beleive its still a driveshaft issue or motor/trans mount overtorquing.

Sorry for the confusion. I brought up two topics in that last post. Yes I still have the driveshaft vibration, but I have also had this highway speed vibration before I did any of the work. And occassionaly it sneaks in around 45-50mph as well as highway speeds. Its the slower speed thing that is making me worry.
