The problem is that the laptop hangs on boot. It will progressively get farther and farther into the boot process and eventually will run as if there is no problem. I used it last weekend and I think it too me 6 reboots to get it to go, but it did. The problem has not changed since I got the machine 1 year ago - so it's not getting worse. It just exists.

It is almost certainly a software problem. Just needs a reformat/reinstall. You can use any windows CD and just use the product key on the bottom of the laptop to register it and it's 100% legal. You won't be able to keep MS office so be sure to have those install discs handy. If they don't have a key code you can extract it from the laptop before you R/R it as long as the version you reinstall is identical to the one you remove.
$200 is a fair price for that LT. Pentium M 1.7 w/512 megs memory will run all common programs out right now. I would suggest sticking with Windows XP. You would benefit a lot by spending ~$60 for a 1mb stick of ram to upgrade it to 1256mbs.
