Race Gear - Chris - 06-29-2004

Any good websites for race gear? My b-day is around the corner and I'm trying to figure out what to get. Originally I thought a helmet and neck collar, but I may lean towards cheap wheels/tires. So basically whats a good helmet and collar and a place to find them.

make a trip and try them on

the neck collars are cheap, so get one if you like, but they're really more for karting or really long stints in the car (like an instructor or endurance racer). Otherwise, they don't provide any real extra safety from what I understand, and certianly aren't needed for comfort unless you have some sort of muscle deficiency and can't hold up your own head.

Of course, you probably couldn't turn the wheel either.....

yes, the neck collars are for comfort only. I have a sparco donut barely used that I will sell you for cheap if you want it.

Test fitting a helmet is an absolute must. You cant trust the sizing charts, just ask Maeng. Chart told him he was a M, but my XL fit him perfect.
So head out to OG and try some on. Bell M2 is a fantastic helmet for the money.

Even for that, I have no neck fatigue at all. I used to get a really sore neck after a long weekend without one.

That's cause you do too much neck bobbing. I'd ask for some shocks if I were you Chris Tongue

Pretty much the same here... I think those sizing charts need a makeover. I was right on the borderline between L and M. M's are headache inducing painful, L's are still too tight, and XL is what I ended up buying. It's massive. I probably look like one of the troopers on Spaceballs.

I think Jess and I are going to hit up OG Racing tommorrow to try on helmets.. No more open-face loaner helmets!

- .RJ - 06-30-2004

John - what time? I need to heat out there and get some rollbar padding, maybe i'll meat you gusy there.

We must've missed you. I got an Bell M3 Extra and Jess got a regular M3. The sales guy told me I had a big head - but I didn't get a discount for being insulted. Oh well. No more loaners for us!

damn, M3. bLinG!!!

I think Im going to replace my helmet with a higher end lighter model when the SA05s come out.

- .RJ - 06-30-2004

Those were the ones that fit. We each tried on at least 7-8 helmets, from all manufacturers except Sparco (too much $$$ to even consider)...

So are we gonna get burned by having SA2000 helmets? What is NASA's policy with regard to helmet ratings? I know SA2000 is good for now, but when will that expire?

- .RJ - 07-01-2004

SA2000 should be good until 2010 (at least). SA2005 helmets wont be out for a while.

- Mike - 07-01-2004

Hehe I just looked up where OG's new location is... 1.11 miles from where I'm sitting. Don't even need to go out to Rt 28 Tongue I see a lot of money burning this summer.

- Sijray21 - 07-01-2004

damn, those helmets are expensive. Are all helmets atleast $220?

- Mike - 07-01-2004

Yeah Sad I think I'm okay with my $10 DOT approved motorcycle helmet for now Tongue
