JohnC down under! - JohnC - 07-26-2007

I'm likely headed to Canberra, Australia for 6 months starting in October. Bikes are more expensive, but there are all sorts of cool ones that we never got here. The weather is opposites-ville, and I think they all drink Fosters all the time. Besides that, I know very little about the place...

Anyone ever been down there before?

- .RJ - 07-26-2007

I heard the water in the toilets swirls backwards. You have to confirm or disprove this myth.

- Kaan - 07-26-2007

they drink bud down under...

- CaptainHenreh - 07-26-2007

The water doesn't flow backwards, that has to do with the size of your toilet outlet

The storms rotate the other direction, though.

Please try to drive a Falcon XR6 for me and tell me it's the worst thing you've ever sat your ass in so I won't want one anymore. Thanks.

Oh, and Have fun with these little guys:

- Hunter - 07-26-2007

We had a visiting professor here last yea from the university of Sidney and he liked to say (cue Australian accent) "Fosters, Australian for crap".

However if that means it's the Australian version of PBR, then bring it!

- ScottyB - 07-26-2007

please have someone take a picture of you drinking this beer:

Apparently the exchange used to be *much* better, like 2 to 1. Now its more like 1.13 to 1, so everything is a little on the expensive side. Of course, I'll be getting per-diem every day and all other expenses taken care of, so I can concentrate on finding a decent bike and some nice roads.

Oh and theres some sort of work I have to do or something, I don't really remember...

- John - 07-26-2007

Wow - details? Did you threaten to quit and this opportunity arose or what?

- JohnC - 07-26-2007

Nope. I walked in on Tuesday (after returning from a "business" trip to San Diego), and my boss asked if I was interested in going to Australia. It was mostly finalized today, although it won't really be completely in the bag until late August.

- John - 07-26-2007

Random - but congrats!

- Feersty - 07-27-2007

Nice. Drive a Holden Commodore for me. My friend has dual citizenship. His family is from Perth. Its like 24 hours in a plane to get there.

Thank Mr Busheypoo for that... I'm currently in London... A value meal at McDonalds costs $12.

It was like that when I went to London in ~1991 as well. Exchange rates will always fluctuate....

Please don't go down this road of economic ignorance...

i won't pretend to not be ignorant... please tell me why they make similar wages in pounds, but our dollar is only worth half of one pound.

If I had three hours to sit down and explain the macro-policies that govern how exchange rates fluctuate, then I'd do so. But I don't...

The President has pretty much zero impact on the exchange rate, and the dollar has been in less and less demand as other nations have started to use the hard Euros instead of hard dollars. Demand for the Euro goes up, demand for the dollar goes down, relative exchange rates follows suit. It has nothing to do with who the President is...
