Project Poopra *Turbo #2* - Ryan T - 01-28-2007

Well, I never made one of these threads for my car, but seeing as I am about to go turbo, there will be lots of work done, so its about time I made one.

Car:
1995 Toyota Supra SE 5speed.
I bought the car with 91k miles in August of 2004 thanks to a link Dave gave me, that he was given by Rex. Drove up to Bethesda the next day, drove it and put down a deposit.

Mod #1:
Greedy PE exhaust. Pretty straight forward install, get a few jacks to hold the exhaust up and bolt her in place and put it on the hangers. Exhaust eliminates the dual pipes into one single 3.5" pipe. Tip is big enough to hold a watermelon, but a $700 exhaust for $250 I wasn't going to complain.

Old:

New:

Mod #2:
Wing and Injen Intake. I didn't think the supra looked right wingless so I bought a wing to match the car from a friend in NOVA. Install was basically easy, but it's hard to bring yourself to drill through your car. I did the typical measure 3876526723 times and drill once. Looks much better. Also removed the restrictive stock intake and installed an Injen Intake. Sounds better, runs better.

Before:

After:

Intake before:

Intake after:

Mod #3:
TT Wheels. Ditched the 225/55/16 and 245/55/16 stock wheels in favor of some 245/45/17 and 275/40/17 TT wheels and tires. Made the car look much better and greatly improved the handling, at a very small cost to the ride comfort.

Thanksgiving 06:
120k mile service. Replaced the stock plugs (which turned out to be advance auto special plugs) with NGK 3330s, OEM plugwires, PCV valve/gromet, transmission fluid and differential fluid, distributor cap/rotor. Took 3 or 4 hours with plenty of bench racing and screwing around. Thanks to Goodspeed for his help doing the work.

January 2007:
Purchased turbo kit. Purchased a daveh manifold with a IHI 62mm turbo. 3" downpipe that will flow into my 3.5" exhaust. Should almost double my horsepower. I put down 177.5rwhp with just the exhaust and the typical results for this kit are a little over the 300whp range. Still sourcing a few parts.

Picked these parts up today:
HKS SSQV blowoff valve with gold and silver fins.
Autometer 52mm boost gauge
Single 52mm A-pillar gauge holder.
Supra drag headlight (has the high beams cut out for direct air to filter.
2.5" piece of intercooler piping with flange for the blowoff valve.

Still need:
Intercooler and piping
Wideband o2
SAFC for tuning
38mm wastegate

Awesome thread. You are really accumulating parts quickly. Perhaps it will be ready to go in sooner than expected.

Nice writeup man.

- Ginger - 01-28-2007

Is that headlight an air intake? A factory piece? That's bling, if that's what it is :-D

- Sijray21 - 01-28-2007

this is awesome...!

i've always loved supra's and i'm anticipating the development of this thread! The fact that you're going turbo is making me giddy Big Grin

- WRXtranceformed - 01-28-2007

Hell yeah dude =)

The HKS SSQV sounds awesome btw, that's what I run =P

Yeah, the headlight is a form of an intake. Directly behind the headlight is where the filter for the intake sits. Direct cold air. Not exactly a factory piece, it's the factory headlight that's had a dremel taken to it.

- WRXtranceformed - 01-28-2007

Are you worried about rain water soaking into your intake filter, or is it shielded from that?

- Ryan T - 01-28-2007

I'll only run that headlight at autox/dragstrip/track in dry weather. I don't think the police would like me running it everyday, although it may make a few PTC appearances.

Good call
I could even see driving through a small puddle causing you to have an extremely bad day with that thing equipped!

Yeah Dave used it on track days, it looks cool and is functional.

- Goodspeed - 01-28-2007

w00t for Supra boost! I can just see you sucking in small animals through the drag headlight.

- Dave - 01-28-2007

that headlight rocks. And it looks eerily familiar  Think I can borrow it for VIR in Feb ;-)?

- HAULN-SS - 01-28-2007

you gonna detail that engine bay as you tear into this?

send me some damn pictures of that intercooler and you've got a deal. Wayne has another one just like mine, I dunno if he gave it to the guy who bought the car or not. If not, I bet he'd hook you up.

- ScottyB - 01-29-2007

lookin good Thayer. this will be a pretty big transformation coming up here...

- Ryan T - 02-01-2007

So I've been debating whether or not to paint my front mount intercooler. If I did paint it, I would put the word "surpa" on it in the classic supra font. My friend did a quick photoshop, but if you can do better and make the entire word 'supra' in black that would be awesome. Thoughts?

- ScottyB - 02-01-2007

i'd say leave it. it is a cool font, but from far away it looks kinda like scribble

please spell it right if you do this ;-). I'll have to kill you if you put it on like that. BTW, did you get the pic links for the IC?

- REED - 02-01-2007

Are you thinking of getting that lip to? I think it looks pretty good
