Dead Battery - mrbaggio - 07-17-2006
2003 WRX original battery.
My girlfriend left the lights on in the car over night, and now the battery is DEAD. Does not even making a clicking sound.
Tried to jump it today with no luck. The dash lights got a little brighter, but it would not turn.
I figured I would walk the battery into the nearest autoparts store, and have them test it. Maybe they can charge it???
What do you guys think? Does the quality of jumper cables matter? We used pretty sorry cables. I could call my auto service for a jump. Worth it?

uhhhh... i think you answered your question already. take it to advance, have them test it, buy a new one based on the results.

I've had plenty of batteries that wouldnt budge with a jump start.
Sounds like its really dead.

Even if you got the car cranked w/ your alt would not recharge it. The charging system in a car is not a battery charger, it is there to MAINTAIN a charge. If you had a dead battery you only option is to recharge it and see if it works. Sometimes you can drain them so far that they will not recharge even on a battery charger.
There should be NO reason your car wouldn't crank jumping it. This assumes you were jumping from a vehicle with greater than or equal size batteries and using good jumper cables. After all, all you are doing is extending the wires to the battery, just like in a battery relocation.

Advance will charge it for free. Take about 20min to an Hour. Drop it off, come back later.

You are starting off the secondary battery, not the first. The jumper cables hook directly to the battery cables thus providing voltage to the system just like the actual battery would. You are hooking them up in parallel not series.

Ditto.
Batteries can fail in such a manner that they will act like a current block. I've had it happen a couple times... batterie's fried fried.

I know how to jumpstart a car....
If the battery is so dead that it wont hold any charge at all, it wont even work to start the car off a secondary charge. The resistance is too high interally.

isn't the starter of the dead-battery car physically connected to jumper cables and is running off the circuit from the second car? therefore negating the dead battery's need in the circuit.

The starter is run off the battery, via the main fuse block (usually). The ground from the battery goes to the frame, through the chassis, back to the other car. The battery is still in the circuit unless you hook the cables directly to the starter, and well, good luck with that one.

I jumped PLENTY of dead, and I mean DEAD stuff. We are talking tractors that have sat in the woods for a year or more, they fire right up (well, at least turn over) the dead battery provides no resistance whatsoever.

Having been in a situation just last week where we couldn't jump with a completely friend battery in the loop I'm going to have to disagree. They may not ALWAYS fail in that fashion, but it is definitely possible.

odd. My WRX headlights turned off automagically when the ignition was off.
If the battery was completely drained, the maximum capacity the battery will hold has been at least cut in half.
Since it has only been a day since it was drained, the battery may take a low voltage slow charge to get some juice back.
Personally I would get a new one (ie- the GF gets a new one)
Getting stranded and trying to get help for a push start sucks (ask me how i know)

Im going to side with everyone else on this too. Batteries can get too dead to jump - you just havent run into one that was that dead yet. If you hooked directly to the wire going to the starter and grounded the other cable on the car somewhere - then it might

Look, unless the battery has a dead short you can still jump the vehicle. A BROKEN battery is different than a DEAD battery. Next time you can't jump a car, unhook the - cable and try.
