Another one of *those* threads - JackoliciousLegs - 11-18-2005

Alright guys... I'm going to need to start commuting every day to work here in Chicago... and I need a car. Don't give me ideas like "that 3rd gen you've always wanted" or "miata with 160k"... I need something reliable, under 15k, and that I can throw around at an AutoX if I want to. I also need to to be reliable. I won't be able to do much work on it, and that's even if I find a dedicated parking spot. I need it to be reliable. Also, it needs to get decent gas mileage, and I'd prefer something... er... reliable.

Right now, I'm looking at things like this: link

Oh, and I can't care if it gets scratched, keyed, dented, destroyed... or torn apart by the excessive amounts of salt used...

READY GO!!!!!

oh boy your gonna hate that car, it just sucks nuts. Plain and Simple. If your commuting, get a car with long gear ratios to save on gas. Maybe get a used....dsm!! join the bandwagon!. If you keep it stock, itll be extremely reliable. Now that that is out of the way...

How bout an NA mr2? Find one with low miles, they are relaible, plus you can throw me around at autocross. They are awesome for daily driving also cuz they are so small they fit through traffic easily and also park easily. I drove my friends around for a long while and it was decent, but nothing compared to my gsx...lol...

PS an awd car might be much better for chicago during the winters. A gsx might just be up your alley...or maybe an older subaru 2.5rs.

Used WRX. Decent gas mileage, you can find them for under 15k all day long, dead reliable, and great at an autox.

Here's one in your area

- Evan - 11-18-2005

used WRX, Si like you mentioned, or used mazda3 or Protege5 would be my votes

- JackoliciousLegs - 11-18-2005

hmmm... wrx.. mazda 3... why will i hate the SI?

- white_2kgt - 11-18-2005

you should beable get get a used Mazda6 for 15k. Great commuter, that's what I usually drive to work. 42k on the clock now and only problem was a bad fan switch that was fixed under recall.

- .RJ - 11-18-2005

2 wheels + 600cc's would fit the bill.

- Sijray21 - 11-18-2005

you're in chicago and if you plan on traveling out of the city during the winter time (snow drifting  ), a WRX would be a good buy. About the same price and gas mileage as the ep3 you're looking at. I think you'll be happy with both purchases, but i think the WRX would be a better functioning car for you.

oh yeah, and you get b00st Wink, awd, and 4 doors.

Gets damn cold up there, I hear

*insert pussy comments here*

- Jeff - 11-18-2005

Get the WRX. Makes the most sense for the "up Norte' A"' action. Good in the Shinizow, good mileage, neat car, fast...

- ScottyB - 11-18-2005

mini cooper S! drive to work italian-job style every day. it's tiny, has plenty of space for you and your lady, fwd in the snow and is basically a go-kart.

i have to say, i haven't been that impressed by WRX's in autocrosses. STi's and worked-on WRX's yes, but not stock ones. nothing a set of summer wheels/tires couldn't fix i suppose.

don't get an Si of that year. they are lackluster unless you plan to throw money at the suspension.

- Mike - 11-18-2005

used wrx or a 2.5rs

A bigger rear swaybar and some endlinks makes all the difference in the world...

JackoliciousLegs Wrote:hmmm... wrx.. mazda 3... why will i hate the SI?

The year of those si have only 160 horsepower. They are even slower than the 99-00 si. They have a weird shifter and they are completely ugly. Also on the highway, your revs are going to be at 4000 at like 65-70. That would suck up gas if your travelling at 80 commuting...

- JackoliciousLegs - 11-18-2005

Thanks for that insight! It's great to get info like that! Keep it coming. This is what I've found so far in the chicago area.

- REED - 11-18-2005

yeah that STi seems a bit low

- JackoliciousLegs - 11-18-2005

but a bit hot... i'd pay that

The 2.5rs looks like a good bet.

- Andy - 11-18-2005

In the vein of WRX, Saab 9-2X. Looks more professional than WRX, or STI or SI or most of the other recommendations. Also, no one in the world will think you're a heterosexual if you rock a Mini.

I doubt he can get one of those for under 15k, at least not at this point.
