Roadrace and AutoX Instructive Books and Videos? - PDenbigh - 01-16-2005 Ironically, I see very little in this section that actually applies to good driving ;-). As such - What books or videos would you guys reccomend for a "new" driver, as in new to the track and high performace? Officers - once we get a good list here, what do you think about hitting up Carrier Library and seeing if they can get some of these books or vids? TIA for any suggestions! - mpg9999 - 01-16-2005 Secrets of Solo Racing by Henry A. Watts is a good one to start out with. It's only about 15 bucks. You guys are welcome to borrow my copy as long as you dont plan on keeping it for an extended period of time. Im in NOVA though. A library can get you almost any book. Just do an inter library loan if they don't have it. I have yet to not be able to get a book that way. - Evan - 01-16-2005 Drive to Win Carrol Smith Going Faster Skip Barber School Solo Secrets (forget the author) and I just picked up Inner Speed Secrets by Ross Bentley that I havent read, but I have heard from a few people that it is excellent. oh btw, I have brand new copies of the top 3 books on that list due to an amazon double-charge screwup. If anyone wants to buy them I can bring them to VIR. - .RJ - 01-17-2005 Solo Secrets - great series (3 books) Skip Barber book - very, very good - ScottyB - 01-17-2005 High Performance Driving - Bob Bondurant good book, not too much reading but enough to give an in depth view on driving techniques and tactics, as well as instructions on how to properly take corners and drive in race situations. he also has a small part of the book devoted to how to go about buying a race car. good diagrams and pictures too. i paid about 20 bucks for it, and recommend it. - Dave - 02-13-2005 I've got the following Going Faster Speed Secrets 1 Both were good for a beginner like me Glad others spoke up, now I've got a few more on my list to grab - Andy - 03-03-2005 mpg9999 Wrote:Secrets of Solo Racing by Henry A. Watts is a good one to start out with. . Actually reading that one now. Not bad. Really good for the real noobie - white_2kgt - 03-07-2005 ScottyB Wrote:High Performance Driving - Bob Bondurant I was a little dissapointed in this book (5th edition). True, it had some really good stuff in it about 1/2 way though. Seemed the first 1/2 was more of an advertisement for his school and a history of 'Bob' and why you should be reading this book. Ok, I already bought the damn thing, just give me the dirt, don't try and sell it to me AGAIN! I've read almost all the other books mentioned in this thread and there were about 10 pages of info in this book that 'cleared up' what the others were trying to say. I really enjoyed some of the illustrations that really drove home the points he was trying to make. All in all I'd have to say the SOLO racing book had the absolute most info for someone who's only been autocrossing/tracking for 2 years or less. Any more than that and I'd say pass. Move onto the Carrol Smith books (all of them). Pete, don't discount the how to build a racecar books either. Most of them get really detailed into how to setup a car, build a car, etc and really do a good job of explaining how such and such a mod will effect the car in a turn, on a straight, during braking, etc. Knowing how a car will react to input is just 1/2 the battle, knowing what input it give it is the other 1/2. --chad - Andy - 03-08-2005 I was checking out Carrol Smith's Prepare to Win and Drive to Win at B&N. Holy crap, sections of those books were so complicated. Definitely not for noobies like myself. I think I'll go back to learning heel-toeing. - JohnC - 03-17-2005 My birthday presents from Jess:
