FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - JustinG - 04-11-2015 No idea why I am even posting this here......but may as well. http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin ... ost4814033 MM Price - $5000, All others - $5500 Find me a buyer, you get $100 Quote:2004 Forester XT Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - WRXtranceformed - 04-12-2015 Another MM Suby bites the dust. What's up next for you? Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - JustinG - 04-12-2015 No clue. If this doesn't sell....an engine rebuild is up next. Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - ViPER1313 - 04-12-2015 Are you sure it's even a cracked ring, not just a stuck ring? Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - JustinG - 04-12-2015 Well regardless the motor has to be torn apart. Given that cracked rings is a known and frequent possibility, I am pretty confident its a cracked ring. Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - ViPER1313 - 04-12-2015 I mean, letting it sit in Seafoam overnight, running it for bit then testing it is a hell of a lot cheaper and easier than swapping the motor... Not to mention that 14% leak-down is far from the end of the world from everything I have read.... 20+ is when you worry.. Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - JustinG - 04-12-2015 Per Subaru, anything over 7% is rebuild time. Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - Sully - 04-12-2015 Bro, if you like the car...buy a rebuilt engine from a performance shop for like 3500-4k or something. I don't remember the exact price but if I go with a suby, i want to budget for one from the start. Or just buy a used short/long block and build it to how you want and drop it in. Then you can take your time rebuilding yours and sell whichever one you don't want in the end. I dumped money, blood, and sweat into it but once I found low compression and possible engine rebuild symptoms, i decided to cut my loses Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - davej - 04-12-2015 you have DJ's number, no? Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - ScottyB - 04-13-2015 new factory, sealed EJ257 shortblock is like $1500 from subaru NA. budget another grand for stock-fitment, stock compression forged pistons and installation before the engine ever sees the inside of your engine bay. install, carry on. this is the standard procedure for any factory shortblock now, the stock pistons are a known quantity for their weakness at this point. I kind of want to buy this, and do exactly this. Just tow it to the house, take the block to Winchester, say "make it do" and then put it back in...with maybe a bigger turbo. Ugghhh...doubt i could offload the prius fast enough. #ohwell :dunno: Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - WRXtranceformed - 04-13-2015 Do an Ebay-style no reserve auction for the MM forum. I bet one of these jokers would take it off your hands :p Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - D_Eclipse9916 - 04-13-2015 I think you are making the right move. You like the idea of the car but it's been just one bad problem after another. Doing motors, getting a car back to stock is not worth it in my opinion in your case. Hours and hours, possibility of shit going wrong, budget always is 1.5x-2x what you hope for and stress/time while you have a kid/wife inside for maybe another $1k in selling price (once you factor in cost to fix)? No thanks. Dump it if you can find some joker for within 2k of your current asking price. Fucking run away. Any sane person would have a while ago. Getting a long block vs short block for example? The performance engine i was looking at also said they came with the sti crank. This was for an ej255 btw. Is the sti crank that much better? If i do it, ill want to shoot for like 350whp with upgraded turbo and what not. Would there be any benefit getting the 257 and would it come with the crank? From what i understand, you could use the 255 head on the 257 block cause its the same block with a different dome shape, right? Scotty, learn me on what i need to pull all this off and if its worth it. Re: FS: 04 FXT, MT, JBP - Bad #4 Cyl - CaptainHenreh - 04-14-2015 honestly, if you had a second car I'd just throw forged slugs in this one and call it a day. The main difference between the 255 and 257 is the variable valve timing on both cams with the 257 vs just the one cam (intake?) on the 255. but crack this bitch, put in forged pistons, and call it a day. I'm not convinced the STI crank offers anything over the 255 crank, and the Subaru short block still has shitty hypereutectic pistons. |
