Project: Track Dog - Sully - 12-18-2012

Alright, so as most people on facebook know, I recently acquired a new friend. For those who don't here is a little backstory. Peter Denbigh was the one to actually rescue the dog and here is the posts form his FB. The customary TL;DR will be summed up at the bottom.

I couldn't find the better ones I was reading in the days leading up to the day I picked him up

Quote:Friends - please share and help find this dog a home. Updated description: He seems to be part German shepherd, part hound, I think. Has a very sweet personality and likes to be around people. He is housebroken but not really "Trained"
otherwise (sitting, staying, etc). On brief walks around the neighborhood, he gets the concept of healing pretty quickly and walks with a loose leash with only minor corrections. He is not neutered.

He enjoys car rides and was not noticeable during our 5 hour trip back from WV.

He is old, malnourished, and acts as if he was beaten in his previous home. Very timid with his tail normally tucked, but shows sings of happiness and being able to overcome his past.

He is eating and drinking a ton right now as we're trying to get some nutrition back in him. He doesn't like being alone, and whined last night from the basement until I gave in and let him sleep in our room on the floor, where he was very content and quiet.

He would be a perfect companion for someone looking to share sofa space or keep your feet warm. He seems as though he would low maintenance and very appreciative of anything he receives. Even just a nice word his way gets his tail moving, and he's especially happy when chowing down on some good kibble.

If I don't find a home after Monday, I'm going to have to take him to a shelter. Please help him avoid that experience and share this with all you know. Let's find this pup a home! I have reached out to Love For Animals Sanctuary & Rescue near Charlottesville, VA, hoping they might be able to locate a home too. Any other suggestions for no-kill shelters are welcome! Thanks all!

Quote:Friends - thanks for your patience and your help with trying to find the homeless dog another foster home or permanent home. We need to have something decided/lined up/done by tomorrow evening (Thursday) or unfortunately, I have no other choice but to take him to a shelter :-(. He's too old and too sweet to deserve that. As of today he's neutered, has all shots, has flea treatment, and is ready to go. We have given him a new lease on life and hopefully a fresh start, but we're out of time and capacity. Please help foster or adopt this pup!

So I took a leap and picked him up on Thursday. He just looked too sweet and old to go to a shelter (Everyone only wants to adopt young dogs or puppies) He is a great dog with only a few quirks to get worked out but after what he has been through, I can't blame him and understand it will take awhile and some paitence before I worry about actually training him to be 100% complient. For now its mainly the bathroom schedule and the fact he refuses to move after laying down on something. (Mainly a problem when i'm getting ready for bed and he's laying on the covers.)

He doesn't seem to have a problem meeting new people and like Pete said in his posts, he is super eager to please. He loves to snuggle up in bed in the morning. And he seems like he will be well behaved enough to make it out to the occasional track weekend so he can meet some friends. He is starting to show more and more signs of happiness but is still pretty timid most of the time.

The biggest thing right now is HE NEEDS A NAME. With the creativity in MM, I figure this would be a good place to look for suggestions. I'm super indecisive so its really hard to come up with one i really really like and that fits him.

TL;DR :
Got 9 year old dog, he needs a name. GO!

I'm forgetting a lot of things like all my posts, if you guys tihnk of better things to post, you comments will help me be more clear minded.

Looks like a Roscoe to me

Re: Project: Track Dog - Jewels - 12-18-2012

I like LeRoy. Its just enough junkyard to me. I'm glad you decided to take him Matt. If he'd been a little younger, and up for having an energetic little brother we'd have taken him. He needs a good home, and it looks like you are willing to provide it.

Re: Project: Track Dog - PDenbigh - 12-18-2012

This is GREAT! Man this does my heart good. Way to go Matt. He looks happier in that picture than I ever saw him.

He was found near the most rural WalMart you'll ever know (whole county as 4 stoplights, one of them because of Walmart). As such, I considered naming him Wally, but didn't want to impose on his new home's preference.

Keep the posts coming! And I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting on Rex's wit to contribute.

Peter

Based on his badassery in the face of adversity my suggestion is Tycho.
