Enjoy your modern beetle convertible. This is a turrible development in the automotive world.... at least Ferrari was the first one in with the turbos.
McLaren was the first one to go turbo, Ferrari is just following suit now. And what is so different between the 718 and the 914 (other than the fact that 911 snobs hated the latter too)?

Car performance is so high nowadays, I go for the "experience" not the best performance.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - rherold9 - 01-28-2016

It's going to be sad days for the petrol engine as it dies off. All manufactures moving to smaller turbo engine then eventually even smaller turbo engine hybrids, and then just straight electric. No more huge ridiculous engine and bad ass V8's or V12's unless someone can somehow make them more fuel efficient and produce less emissions Sad

Not saying that I don't agree, but that also happened in the 70s (smaller engines, turbo engines, FWD to increase effiency).

They came back, and better than ever. Doubt it will happen again, but gas is also the cheapest per gallon...ever (if you correct for inflation).

Very true, it's just the matter of us lowering the CO2 levels enough to keep the environmentalists happy and then reverting back to ridiculousness

Then again, the world's population is increasing so exponentially I don't know if it will every be the same.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - RawrImAMonster - 01-28-2016

I'm guessing 50 years from now or less, there won't be any more new cars with gas motors. But, I also think that gas will still be around for people who want to run classic cars since they will be an extreme minority. I can't see them banning gas altogether once electrics become the norm.

This is taking a fairly optimistic view for the future, but once we figure out cold fusion reactors and have (nearly) limitless energy, it won't be a big deal to make some sort of device to suck C02 out of the atmosphere and start fixing the shit storm we're causing. Hell they're already talking about making devices that do just that to cut down on factory emissions in the near future. It takes a lot of energy, but it can be done. We just need a lot more clean energy available to do it on a larger scale.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 01-28-2016

I saw that article too, pretty interesting end-of-pipe solution for CO2 emissions given how many applications methanol has.

I'm so burned out on the whole automotive-enthusiast-crying-end-of-times shit. People have been shitting a sideways brick over emissions regulations and the death of the manual transmission since the 1960s.

It will not happen in our lifetimes. Full stop.

Even if they stop producing performance oriented cars, which is something I find extremely unlikely given the love for the Tesla and excitement over hypercar hybrids like the 918, (plus the general tendency to excess our culture has) there's still a plethora of cars already in existence that aren't just going to evaporate over the next 100 years.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - CaptainHenreh - 01-28-2016

The best things about this I've seen is Will Smith's character in the awful I, Robot.

everyone thought he was insane because he drove his own car while everyone else had exclusively self driving cars. We're not just going to (eventually) see the death of the petrol engine, but the death of the personally owned everyday transportation.

WHICH MEANS THAT COOL RACE CARS AND SHIT ARE GONNA BE BIG FAT ROOTS BLOWER V16'S BECAUSE FUCK IT IT'S A LUXURY GOOD ANYWAY.

Second best thing from that movie is this:

I, Robot was awful?

Willing to bet Rex hated it because it had very loose roots to the books.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 01-28-2016

Interesting article about what it would be like to be a female driver/motorcyclist.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a28027/when-i-stopped-cutting-my-hair-i-learned-how-men-treat-women-on-american-roads/

I find it simultaneously surprising and unsurprising. Surprising because I've never personally seen anything like that, and in my own mind I feel like I'm less likely to get into a confrontation with another driver if they're female.

Unsurprising because people's capacity to act like total bags of shit to random strangers has been old news to me for years now.

Well to be fair, just because a = b doesn't make b true. Even if all premises are true in an argument it doesn't mean the conclusion is 100% correct. Just pulling in stuff from my 5th grade math class I'm taking right now.

In all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if men are more likely to express road rage to a female than a male though.

I've seen plenty of road rage incidents involving male to male, female to male, and male to female. I would agree though I'm sure as hell they are surprised that it is a dude and anyone would have that surprised reaction. It's just a natural thing. I've had occurrences where what I thought was a male was actually a female and it freaked me out.

Not sure what you mean, I'm aware it's an anecdotal story about one person's experience, not a statistical study.

It's just an interesting read, regardless of how widespread (or not) of a problem it is. The story that really got me was when he beeped at someone that wouldn't pull out and the guy raged the fuck out at the woman in the car between them, but had nothing to say to the actual horn-beeper when he turned out to be a 240lb guy. I guess there's a certain type of bag-of-shit person out there that takes any opportunity they can get to demonstrate power over a woman?

I hope if that ever happens to any of the women in my life they run over the fucker's foot. Also God have mercy on the man that tries to pull that off on my Mom. She'd have him pissing on himself in the middle of the street in about four seconds.

I mean, considering it undermined the very point of the effing books, yeah?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 01-28-2016

Ah I think I've heard this from you before now that you say that.

Best way to like a movie is to stay away from the book. That said I really liked The Man in the High Castle show more than the book. The book has a great premise but it's like 95% character development 5% action. Fantastic goddamn action at that, but almost not worth slogging through PKD's weird interpretation of what American English conversation would be like with a strong Japanese cultural influence.
