$68-69k is so completely out of my price range. For that much I would be able to get a car, get my floors redone and granites and maybe have some left over for a few more guns and a burrito from a taco truck.
In all srsness Jake pegged it all for the most part I can admit unashamedly. The luxo-barge segment I hadn't really even considered but you can find some gently used examples for my price range across a couple different makes (most of them unfortunately being German and failing my reliability requirement). Until I get a chance to take a bunch of test drives I can't really say for sure but my gut is pulling me back into a Lexus. I have seen a million soccer moms in E9x M3s and old douches in CTS-Vs but I have only seen 2 IS-Fs since I have lived here.

So the LS is definitely out. Stopped by the Lexus dealership and got ready to take a 2012 for a test drive but declined as soon as I sat in the driver's seat. It is 100% a dad car. I really like the exterior of those cars but the interior is surprisingly bland and old-manish. The steering wheel really stood out to me as looking exactly like an old Camry wheel with a chrome "L" badge on it....which is probably exactly what it is. I knew within the first 2 minutes that I couldn't live with the car.
The dealership had a brand new 2013 IS-F that I probably could have taken for a test drive but the sales guy was a douche and I really didn't want to drive a brand new example of a car that I am going to be buying used and several model years older. Stopping by the Cadillac dealership tomorrow to see if I can wrap my hands around a CTS-V and an ATS.

Another dealer with an ISF in the area was being super shady on the phone too last night. It's going to be harder than I thought to find one in my year range to test drive. I spoke with the sales guy who sold me my CTS who is actually a good salesman. Not only did he remember me and my car, he is lining up a performance package 2.0t ATS to test drive for Monday night. Also trying to track down a CTSV as they don't have any at the moment. Cadillac may end up ultimately getting my business by default because the people that sell Lexus's seem to suck so bad down here.

Oh man okay, I got a chance to test drive two brandy new Cadillacs today. Probably a long read coming!
Had an appointment at the dealer today to test drive a 2.0T ATS with performance (FE3) and magnetic suspension. Showed up, caught up with the salesman (same guy who sold me my CTS almost 2 years ago) and we walked out onto the lot. Unfortunately they did not have a model with both options. So I ended up starting the test drive with a BRAND new 2014 ATS. It literally was just delivered off of the truck, like we had to pull the plastic off of the seats and the steering wheel. The exterior color at that point was irrelevant to me (the car was red) but this car had the Morello Red interior with red carbon fiber accents that I had looked at on a few cars online and wanted to see in person. I can't state enough how sharp this looks in person. I liked it so much that I will not consider this car without it. The red leather stitching and red carbon fiber accents really set that interior off. It actually reminded me of the red interior in my brother's E9x M3.
First impressions:
This car is a lot lighter than my CTS and it FEELS a lot lighter. Everything about it is 100000xs more nimble. The first ATS I drove had the sport suspension but no magneto ride. It is worlds flatter than mine through the turns. The engine definitely runs out of breath in the upper rpms but that is to be expected, it has plenty of power and punch when you need it. The flappy paddles are responsive...not my bro's S4 responsive but quick enough. The second ATS I drove had the same 3.6L engine as my car with the magnetic suspension and although it was a little faster on the top end the power delivery is lunky and sluggish like my car...that's the only way I can really describe it. I'm not really interested in having a different car with the same motor and I couldn't really tell the difference with the magneto suspension on the test drive but there wasn't really anywhere I could push the car that hard.
The Premium 3.6L had the new heads up display that was so sweet. Completely unnecessary but awesome. The Premium package gives you that, lane departure warning (vibrating seat) and blind spot warnings along with a bunch of other stuff. The back seat in the ATS is even smaller than the CTS but it is what it is, it's a smaller car. Trunk is way smaller too which could be an issue. The quality of the interior is absolutely impeccable. I really think this is one of the best "pound for pound" cars for the money. The CUE system is really really nice, everything is managed through the touch interface. 3 USB ports, realtime weather updates with interactive radar, just so many upgraded features over my CTS.
So I was stoked because I found myself liking the car even more after the drives. We were looking through the dealer database for a color / option combo I wanted and I mentioned again that I really needed to drive a CTS-V to help narrow it down. They did not have any used CTS-Vs and one other that was going to another dealership so I couldn't drive it. Salesguy goes in the back and says I have a treat for you, you are driving a brand new CTS-V. We literally had to peel the plastic off of this one too, it had just arrived. Apparently this dealership doesn't really allow test drives for that car anymore because SEVERAL had been wrecked on test drives. The most recent was a pilot (of all people) who wrapped it around a utility pole on an off-ramp to the nearby highway. That made me a little nervous.
First impressions on this beautiful brand new V Coupe was that it was obviously my exact car on the inside with different colors. There were a few differences (boost gauge in cluster, etc.) but it was very familiar. The car itself felt HEAVY which is the feedback I have heard from the guys on the forums. The handling was obviously very tight but you really felt the weight of the car and I can see how it would be easy to let it get away from you. The first punch on a straightaway was a rolling start in automatic mode. I mean that car is pretty fast. Honestly it didn't feel like 556 hp until you really played with the manual shifters from a low roll...that is what really took me back about it. Where that car gives you the oh crap feeling is 4500rpm and up, which is a testament to that engine. The problem is (as noted by my salesman) that by the time you are really experiencing that power band you are going WAY too fast. 40-80 is gone before you blink and you don't feel like you are speeding because of the weight and mass of the car. He mentioned two owners, one who traded his in on an ATS because he got too many tickets and the other who was a friend of his who got nabbed for 140 in a 65 on I-485 (OUCH!!).
I had a huge smile on my face after the drive but I couldn't shake the feeling that the main attractor of that car is that it has a V badge and has presence. I can also see how people have said that you can never really appreciate or use this car to even half of its potential on the street. With that and the fact that a 2010 / 2011 with 35-45k mile example would be the same price as a brand new ATS made me lean toward the first cars I drove. In short I would love a V but I just don't think it makes sense to get 8-10mpg and not even really be able to open the car up.
The challenge now is that there are some good incentives but I am still a little under on my CTS. It sounds like they really want to move the 2013 ATSs because the 2014s are starting to come in so maybe we can work it out. For a little over $47k though before incentives I can spec out a 2014 ATS EXACTLY how I want. So it would have to be the right 2013.
This is a good example of the options list I would prefer albeit a little high on the price range:

Oh, and the ATS doesn't have an option at all for ventilated seats which is a bummer but it is not a deal killer.
Long read but an exciting and surprising night of test drives. CTS-V = awesome car tons of power, big and heavy and exactly like my car, ATS - light, nimble, crazy technology and attention to detail. Both basically the same price with the ATSbeing new or gently used and the CTS-V being a little tenured and probably beat on.
