Heres the deal from my perspective: I have no idea how the internet works.
When I/we thought our hosting was up, I tried to ask questions and learn more about how/what/where this site is hosted. I got a few answers and learned a little bit, but...
The jedi's that created this site rarely post anymore, and no one has taken the time to explain exactly:
1. Where this site is hosted (beyond Nexpoint...what the hell is Nexpoint?)
2. What is tangible...how do we "move" the site? What do you take, and where do you put it?
3. Who started this website, and HOW did they do it in the first place
4. What exactly are our options for moving it? How long will that take? How long will the site be down?
The biggest problem, however, is WHO'S responsibility is this? Obviously its the clubs as a whole, but who has the answers? Who can take charge of this?
The (weird) thing is, the club's O-Team aren't the ones who can effectively deal with this, its the alums who have the answers and know how this works. It sounds like that might change soon and the next batch of officers apparently have some techno-wizardry know-how.

As an outside observer, it would seem the problems are this:
-alums with money will pay if given the option
-current students are responsible for it
-only a select few have the motivation to do something
-those few don't know enough to understand how it works
You're having elections, is there a Webmaster position who can officially be responsible for this? If not, there should be. Along with things like finances, there should be a packet of web schtuff that goes from person to person so people aren't always asking who/what/where about this site.
FWIW, the internet isn't a hard thing to learn about. It might be a good idea to understand it because unless you're gonna be working on a shop floor, you're probably going to have to deal with it in some respect. That knowledge is pretty attractive to employers.

Really guys, I would do more, but it works and I just don't have the time or motivation to do a revamp of the site / add a more baller gallery / create a sweet content management system / switch hosts. One of the current students needs to take some initiative. Who in the club is a CS major / can code PHP / CSS / SQL?
EDIT: There is nothing super special about this website. It is a phpBB message board with a CuteNews CMS and Coppermine photo gallery. Database is MySQL. Anyone with minimal web development experience could manage this site.

Head over to the Elections forum and read my thread! I'm working on a site re-do based on Wordpress. I'll keep the phpBB message board. I'm a SMAD major and know enough about this junk to make things a bit more baller and 2009.
I'm all for switching hosts. My site is hosted through IX Web Hosting and I'd be fine using them for MM as well. It's fast, has good support, and we could have space on my friend's server (that hosts my site) for $20ish per year.

I've looked up CuteNews and there doesn't seem to be a lot of support or development going on. My hope is that the CMS part would be used. The forum is great, but I don't think phpBB is the solution to everything.
Wordpress has a very active user base. There is a ton of development and plugins to do just about anything are readily available.

Matter of opinion - I'm all for simple over complex and clean over cluttered. This site doesn't need to (and god help us if it does) mimic Myspace or Facebook. I'm the type of user who uses programs like foobar2000 instead of iTunes though, so I'm not really the guy to look to when it comes to design and UI advise.
I would recommend upgrading to (and might take it upon myself if I can find the time) phpBB 3.X for security reasons at this point.

phpBB upgrade is long over due (and please please enable theming/skinning so I dont have to look at this awful butter yellow any more).
As for the rest of the site going to CMS, as long as it is maintained it cant hurt and probably would probably result in a better updated homepage/news page.

Same here. Its had its moments of speed lately but overall I'll click and walk away for a while.
Its also doing the thing for me where it highlights a new post in a section, then doesn't show any new posts when entering it, and it logs me out for no reason (even after clicking "remember me")

Not yet... still getting unpacked and I'm already working my 'real' job at Apple. It won't be a fast process of upgrading the site, mainly because I haven't done any work on it yet. I am working on it though, so all hope is not lost
FWIW, I'm having the cookie issue as well. Safari 4 Beta doesn't play nice with some sites though, so that could be an issue.
Give me some time and we'll be back, more ballerrr than ever.
