Alright... time to do some test drives and feeling out the market. Mom just bought a '06 TSX, and says I can borrow her Lexus for a few weeks if I clean it up and help her sell it - so the truck and the VW are both going to go ASAP.
- 92-93 Integra - always on the list
- E46 - not sure I want to own one, those things are like a fucking virus around here
- Mazda 3
- WRX Wagon - may get axed due to 93 octane/avg MPG
- 00+ Celica - if I can fit a bike in the back... will investigate
Its a shame VW's are such turds, I really like the way they drive. Maybe my dad got a rare example...

VR's have a pretty nasty bill when the timing chains have to be replaced. Clutch kit, chains, engine seals, coolant pipes... gotta do it all with the trans off. And the MPG isnt any better than the WRX.
I may go drive another Jetta with the 2.slow, but right now they're off the list.

How about a VW TDI?
I have no idea if they're reliable overall, but my sister's TDI Beetle has over 210,000 miles and counting, and the only CEL it ever threw took a $60 MAF replacement. It's been a total stud and still gets 50+ mpg.

Thats what my dad has. Bought it new in 2001 (I think) and has had minimal fuss with it. Mileage probably at 150k now - then again he's pretty easy on cars and his last daily driver, a '85 Renault :!: went over 300k miles until the frame started to rust through.

Diesel being 4 fucking dollars a gallon is pretty close to making a 50mpg diesel (plus the diesel tax) a false economy.
Also, my parents had a '00 Jetta TDI and it was a total pile o' shit.
It would lock itself.

When I drive my future father-in-law's Audi A4 1.6 - the sunroof will open at random when you're driving down the road. Not fun when you can't close it when you're trying to pass a Fiat Maluchs in the rain on two lane roads.
Many VW sales people will tell you that you will have to drive over 100K miles to see any ROI on diesel (considering the premium price increase for that option) - and that was when it was the same price as petrol.

As somebody who drives a Lotus (12 feet in length and 1950lbs) and a Titan (19ft / 5350lbs) to work, I can assure you that there is a big difference around town. The only advantage to the big truck is that when people are being douches you can bully them with your size.
ok, well I dont think we're talking about trucks. I've driven my dads long bed, extended cab silverado around a lot, and the only time i ever notice is parking.

I've only heard good things about the Mazda man. And if you want to stay with teh boost you can get the Speed3. Don't get a WRX, the gas mileage is the suck unless you start removing cats and leaning it out to make more power. I think I ended up with about 28-29mpg with my old WRX on the highway... but again you're using premium.
