Professors that assign work due the first day of class. commonman.jpg what ever happened to reviewing the syllabus and a couple of ice breakers on day one?

Unrelated, but as long as I'm torqued up; people who cross the road from a parking lot into a box store at a 3 degree angle and hold up traffic forever. WALK WITH TRAFFIC THEN TAKE A 90° TURN AND CROSS PERPENDICULARLY

I didn't realize people still went to places that have parking lots.

Stupid shit like naming an asteroid God Of Chaos, https://timeopen.net/technology/god-chaos-asteroid-apophis-headed-earth-nasa-excited-28028466

"Later in that year, an Australian group managed to spot the asteroid again-and with their data they estimated that the object had a significant 2.7 percent chance of colliding with the Earth in 2029. Fortunately, this prediction has been definitively ruled out."

Something that really gets me is myself... when I am assigned a reading for any class, I lose focus alllll the time. It can take me 30 minutes sometimes just to get through one page because I keep losing focus. ADD or whatever that shit is called. LFD (Loss of Focus Disorder)... sounds legit

I made it through my entire senior year without buying a single book. It took me a while to wise up and realize you almost never actually need them to get through a class

Yeah, if I don't "have" to buy the book, I don't. But I usually still do, and then don't end up reading it much anyway... So maybe I should just not buy it at all, unless my professor really strongly suggests that I need it.

What grinds my gears today is car salesmen that dont know their fucking product.

Last night the guy at the VW Dealer tried to tell us that the golf sportwagen was smaller inside than the alltrack. Its the same fucking body. And also that they got a smaller engine/turbo, which is true on the FWD cars but the AWD cars got same drivetrain. And had no idea the top trim level on the Alltrack got nicer seats. I have no fucking clue what you do if you dont educate yourself before going into a dealer. I had to wait until the guy walked off to tell my wife he was full of shit I didnt have the patience to get into it with him.

Most books for every class are at the library, so if you really need to read something you can usually just go there and read it for free.  Or bum off of someone else in your class

You buy the wrong car in that case. Case and point, a friend of my brother. I buy my car, 2.0 Accord Sport. It has a sunroof, proximity sensing entry, heated seats, etc. This is because it is built on the EX platform.

Friend goes to buy an Accord and wants these features, but the salesman tells him that these are only available on the EX. Meanwhile, he wanted a sport. So the salesman convinced him to buy a 1.5 EX to get those features. He then argued with me about my car and tried to tell me I did not have a sunroof or heated seats.

The salesman just didn't grasp that the 2.0 car was built on the EX platform while the 1.5 car is built on the LX (base) platform.

I totally agree.  I can sort of cut car salesmen slack if they're on a used lot and they don't know every detail and every configuration of a brand that they got in on trade or that they don't normally carry.  But if you're selling / leasing brand new cars and you don't know literally everything about every new product on your lot (how many car models do most brands carry at once, maybe 5 at most?) there is no excuse for telling me "I don't know"

My experience is they just lie instead of saying I dont know.  Now I can't trust a single thing you are saying even if maybe you only lied about one small thing.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - .RJ - 05-02-2019

Yeah, used car lot I dont expect them to know more than me - VW doesnt sell that many products and the trim levels are pretty consistent across the range. But dont look at my wife and give her some bullshit to make the $10k more expensive car look more attractive.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - Apoc - 05-02-2019

Everyone doesn't just cut off the salesman and tell them to go away? I already know exactly what I want when I step on the lot. I just need them to hand me the keys for a test drive.

Bingo

Another thing that annoys me to no end. Customers asking me if the company I work for is woman/minority/small business. We are traded on the NYSE - do we look like we fit any of those categories?

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - .RJ - 05-02-2019

Thats what I did when I showed up, but those guys never shut up. Well until I hooned it around the first onramp at least.

Ah, yeah. I do everything I can to get them to NOT come on test rides with me. The last thing I need is some guy who didn't finish high school telling me fake news about model lines he doesn't actually understand.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - ScottyB - 05-02-2019

i actually went to a couple seminars on car sales when i graduated...moving to a new city, no job prospects (lol art major), figured i could make some bucks working sales because i know cars better than most and felt like being an honest guy would make me better at it.  didn't pan out, probably wouldn't have, but i learned some of the tactics that most of these guys use...

your regular, big name superdealer sales guys are working with 3 main things right off the top:
  • they're trying to get you emotionally attached, first and foremost.  that's why most are keen to let you test drive.  they want you in the seat, imagining it in your driveway, and finding ways/excuses to pay for it
  • the average joe only knows the basics about trim levels but most will either be flexible or willing to accept bad info if they're emotionally connected to the driving experience and the sales guys know it.  they only know enough to make conversation while they get you in the seat.  they can sort the rest out on paper or swap cars with other dealers to seal the deal if someone complains enough.
  • from there its a matter of making the payments look good through their own financing wing and doing it as quickly as possible before you have a chance to rethink/back out/shop around.

we're in the weird niche group of people that actually know about the cars, but for the vast majority of their sales, it just doesn't matter and they can get away with it all the time.  that's why shitty sales guys will never change, because their customers can't be bothered to either.

best thing you can do is just ignore them, or send them on a fool's errand (do you have XXX impossible-to-find-color on the lot?) while you look and then jet.

Can confirm. I drove up to NJ to my B5 S4 and they ended up putting a balloon payment loan in front of me. I kept calling their attention to that and they kept saying, "yeah, but your monthly payment is where you want to be!" I ended up buying the car anyway because I wanted to drive it home.

ASide from the ticking time bomb that was the B5, that impending balloon payment was a pretty big factor in why I unloaded it right before the CPO warranty expired.
