Re: Project 10AE Miata - Goodspeed - 11-01-2010

Quick update...got some much needed work done to the cooling system and general maintenance before its/my first official track outing on Saturday.

From:

To:

-Koyo 37mm, Gates hoses, new overflow tank

Question: Next I'll be bleeding the brakes, but I already noticed that all of my bleed screw caps are gone...oops. I never remember to put those things back on. Other than letting air in the system, does this mean that the screws themselves should be replaced if they got dirt/grime on them? The rears have only been left exposed for less than 2k I'm sure, the fronts, at least one for longer than that.

I'll definitely put new caps on, if I can find them. Any ideas? The dealer wants about $60 for 4 screws and caps.

Re: Project 10AE Miata - ViPER1313 - 11-01-2010

Caps are not necessary - it will not let air into the system if they are missing. Most of the cars that I have do not have them - they are completely non-necessary.

Re: Project 10AE Miata - ScottyB - 11-01-2010

bawlin!

liking the blue accents, really ties the engine room together, does it not?

Re: Project 10AE Miata - caa337 - 11-01-2010

such a beautiful engine bay!

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Goodspeed - 11-02-2010

Thanks guys. Yeah, when I saw the option for blue hoses, my inner ricer got the best of me

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Dave - 11-02-2010

Nice clean engine bay. Bet that took a long time...

Don't worry about the rubber caps on the bleeder screws for your brakes. Any shit that collects in there will get pumped out when you bleed them and as long as they're properly closed you should not worry about stuff going in (if anything you should worry about fluid being pumped out). That said, I do like to keep the rubber bits on there, so it can't hurt to score a few more (or buy a bag if you're really bad about forgetting them).

Re: Project 10AE Miata - CaptainHenreh - 11-03-2010

Goodie, for serious, how much to clean my engine bay?

Actually, is there any way someone could make an "engine bay cleaning" sticky? Like "So you want to clean your filthy fuckin' engine bay."

I've always been scared to just take a power washer to it, for fear of letting the smoke out of all my electrics. So what do you do?

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Goodspeed - 11-03-2010

Thankfully the car does most of the work for me. Keeping the bellypan in place is a huge help for keeping dirt etc out, and the relatively simple engine room gives fewer places for grime to collect. The Supra's rats-nest bay sans pan was gross and impossible to keep it from being so. Other than that, some degreaser and a wet rag goes a long way.

Oh, and two bits.

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Goodspeed - 05-28-2011

Time for an update!

Last we left off, I was getting ready for my first track outing (Summit Main - NASA Hyperdrive) back in November. Had a fantastic time, and it was awesome to be on the other side of the fence for once

But, speaking to other first timers, you know what they say about going out bone stock for your first time? Yeah...don't do that. I mean, don't go crazy - you don't need a ton of work done to your car, but a little helps. Like pads and tires. My R4S's/Yoko S.drives did ok, until I lost brakes (pad fade) half way through the session and the tires dropped off shortly thereafter.

I was also spending about half my physical and mental energy trying to brace myself under cornering (body roll + sucky NB1 seats). Not fun, and diverting that focus away from watching my braking/turn-in points made me a little uncomfortable.

So, remedies were in order.

These beauties were installed last weekend. Big thanks to DJ for lending his swoll arms/general help with the whole install!

- Flyin' Miata VMaxx coilovers
- Flyin' Miata Sway Bars
- 949Racing Endlinks
- New Mazda bushings (replaced old ones in coilover assembly)

Installed F/R:

Impressions:

I have about 100 miles on them now, and they've broken in/lowered a bit since those pics. The ride/handling is awesome - they soak up bumps a lot better than the worn out stock pieces and the car rides much smoother than before. The handling is noticeably improved, even without a new alignment (which is forthcoming).

Most of those miles came from driving up to Mt. Airy, MD today for a Miataturbo.net meet and dyno day. I threw the car up on the rollers for shits and came away with some interesting observations...

Dyno Video

Peak WHP/WTQ was 108/97 (lol) on York Automotive's Dyno Dynamics dyno (aka, the "heartbreaker" dyno), which is apparently very strong for a stock 1.8. Maybe I have some sort of factory freak? I found it humorous that a SM in his shop with a $8k motor pulled 112whp without a cat - perhaps I should sell this motor to a SM racer

AFR's though are lean (see below). Likely culprit is that the cold air intake/Mazdaspeed muffler I bought from Maeng because it has those cool purpley-blue metal colors I freakin' love increased airflow just enough to lean things out a bit.

Probably OK on the street/auto-x when I'm not 100% throttle for huge stretches but I'll probably install a simple AFPR kit to bump pressure up a bit before I do any track events again. No big deal - I plan to stick with auto-x for a while to relearn things.

Thats all for now - I'll hopefully have a few more goodies installed before the July 3rd VMP Auto-x...

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Kaan - 05-28-2011

you didnt fix the issues you pointed out...

1. tires
2. brakes
3. moving around in your seat

Wink but at least its still pretty

Those are the "hopefully before next auto-x" bits  Coming in pt. 2 - I realized if I bundled it all together that post would be like 4 pages long.

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Kaan - 05-28-2011

Don't use "race" pads with those wheels... They will ever come clean again.

wow, that is lean. still, great numbers and it looks great so far. tell us moooorreee

Re: Project 10AE Miata - Goodspeed - 05-29-2011

Matt - great movie. "The waters cold, WATERS COLD!"

ScottyB Wrote:wow, that is lean. still, great numbers and it looks great so far. tell us moooorreee

I posted up on the Miata boards about those numbers and people seem skeptical, maybe something is up with his wideband. The numbers in the 20's before the 14's would be like, my car should've been exploding but instead it was making great power (from what I understand). So maybe his equipment is off...

Oh, and I'm just planning/hoping to have a little more grip for both myself and the car - Hankook RS3's are nationally backordered so I'll keep my fingers crossed that my order comes through in time

i'd put my money on that. even with an intake and exhaust i can't imagine an n/a EFI car wouldn't adapt enough over time to keep things in a safe range. also, it sounded awesome in that video clip.

thanks for not dropping it to the frame rails either.

Huzzah.

Quote:If the sniffer isn't calibrated before every run (free air calibration just like a wideband) it can give some pretty questionable readings

I didn't notice that calibration (I think I was eating pizza when it was being set up), so I'm not too worried about it. I'll just avoid any top speed wangan runs in the meantime and I'll get it dyno'ed again in the fall or something just to get another set of AFR readouts from another dyno.

Lulz, ass  . I get it though, you want people to experience shit like that so that they're grounded, and they know what its like to have greasy tires or fading brakes. Keeping them in check.

I was a n00b, but one that already knew what that felt like. Just wasn't fun and I wouldn't mind not having to deal with that again. All i'm sayin'.
