Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 10-28-2014 it is proving an odd device. it isn't quite a tablet so i don't desire to carry it around, but it's also definitely not a laptop; the keyboard is far too flimsy and difficult to use (i fat finger just about every word). metro is far improved with 8.1, but the switching between it and the desktop and metro apps/non metro apps is really awkward... i'm basically running two different operating systems. emotions very mixed, but it was free so i'm happy. finally get to run my windows games outside a VM. picked up tie fighter today. hooked my xb1 gamepad up... glorious memories of 1994. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 10-28-2014 I also went to apple to check out the new iPads. The lineup has unfortunately become a joke with half a dozen different options, but many that nobody should buy. You're an absolute idiot if you buy a mini; they took an already dated device and added an f'ing fingerprint scanner. Nothing else. They likely want people to buy 6+ phones, but those are stupid too. Far too big, and my hands are NBA player large. They even have the audacity to still sell the non-Retina mini. I have one. It is a dog. So slow with iOS 8 that I don't use it. I love the form-factor, but it is unusable. The iPad Air 2 is a nice device, but only if you have an iPad older than a 3 (2+ years old). I have a 3 that still performs pretty well. I'd basically only be shedding half a pound (significant, as that is 1/3 the weight of mine) for new purchase price. I couldn't justify it. I'm pretty salty that they still sell 16GB devices. It costs them nearly nothing to bump to 32. I get that they want to not give people an option and force them to go with 64GB, but it feels like a slimy salesman tactic. Most of my devices are 16GB and it can be a headache to manage them... I don't even store media on them, and that's one of their primary intents. Ugh. That's not valuing your customers The Retina iMac is sick. If I didn't have work-supplied machines, I'd be selling what I had an picking one up. The screen is amazing. For what it is, the price can't be touched. You're basically buying that monitor and they throw a computer in for free. So yeah, Apple is blowing it in the portable space IMO, but nobody is really doing any better. I continue to use Android near daily and it continues to amaze me in its shitiness. The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JPolen01 - 10-28-2014 Mike - tell me what iPad mini I should buy for the fiance. Her Macbook is about done and she's been asking for an iPad for a while. I have $230 best buy gift card so thag covers a good bit. She isn't a power user but I don't want something that's gonna suck. Edit: Will the iPad mini 2 run iOS 8 smoothly? Is the price difference between the 2 and 3 worth it? Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 10-28-2014 Jon you want the iPad Mini 2, as far as I can tell it's the same as the "new" model without Touch ID and it costs $100 less. I'm probably going to pick one up this week for Lauren's b-day because she doesn't like to sit with a computer or even my iPad Air, so she hunches over and reads/facebooks on her phone all night. And yes I mean read, like entire books, on her phone. :dunno: She wonders why she always has a tension headache. Edit: I've reached the same conclusion that you have Mike, it took three full generations to coax me out of my iPad 2, the iPad 3 and iPad 4 just didn't offer enough of an improvement for me to spend the money to upgrade. I'm in a similar boat now, the Air 2 is very pretty and the anti-reflective screen is cool, but *meh,* it's nowhere close to nice enough to get me to buy it over my current one. Edit 2: Jon check the specs: http://store.apple.com/us/ipad/compare It's the exact same device, the touchID is a $100 upgrade basically. I'm running iOS 8 on my 5S right now with no issues whatsoever, I can't imagine the iPad would. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 10-28-2014 Good stuff. I thought the touch id was the only difference. What a joke. iPad 2 mini it is. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 10-29-2014 Yeah, I suppose I missed that... If you are to buy a new mini, make it the original Retina one. $100 for Touch ID is le stupid. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 10-29-2014 JPolen01 Wrote:Mike - tell me what iPad mini I should buy for the fiance. Her Macbook is about done... I'm sure you can figure this out for yourself depending on what she likes to do with it, but I'd recommend the non-mini if you're replacing a laptop. The mini is too small to sit lap-distance away, still see and browse comfortably. Now if she's going to use it as an e-reader or take it on trips, sure go mini. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - davej - 10-29-2014 I've had an order in at work for <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/19/campaigns/laptops-tablets-coming-soon">http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/19/camp ... oming-soon</a><!-- m --> ever since they announced it, for you know, testing. I kinda interested to see if that distance measuring in photos works as advertised. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Beej - 10-29-2014 Mike Wrote:I have a 3 that still performs pretty well.Agreed on most everything but this. The iPad 3 is just about frustrating enough to want an upgrade, particularly after seeing iOS 8 on my iPhone 5S and wife's iPad Mini 2. I was hoping to get more than 2.5 years out of it, but...meh. If I owned [and could sell and get the proceeds from] mine, I think I'd probably agree. Since my 3 has $0 to me, I can't justify the full price for the upgrade. First world job problems
Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 10-30-2014 Just realizing our first gen mini is on OS 7, I guess I better hold off on updating it as long as I can. That being said, Jess' 4s runs 8 just fine so maybe y'alls standards on speed are a little higher than ours.... Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 10-31-2014 yeah, i left my mini on 7. we clearly have differing standards that thing is sloowwwwwwww.
Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 11-10-2014 Does this exist yet? I cannot find. Digital, wireless picture frames that act as an array, synch with eachother and draw off one source, drive or cloud. So you'd only update one spot and the 4, 6, 20, whatever frames you hang on the wall would update and rotate pictures and make sure they're all displaying different pictures. Seems just like a software solution, the hardware's already there. Pretty much any picture frames that have an SD card could have a EyeFi card installed in them, then it'd be pretty much child's play to run a script to cycle pictures. All options seem to be stupid expensive. Awesome idea though, I have 2 frames that we never turn on cause the pics are from 6yrs ago. So if we could link it to a gallery on G+ or FB that would be great. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 11-10-2014 sounds like a good arduino (or raspberry pi, beaglebone etc) project. get coding chan. (or you just buy a few cheapass tablets and hang them up, i bet theres android apps for that) Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 11-12-2014 I got my Spigen iPhone 6 case today. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Spigen-Tough-Armor-4-7-Inch/dp/B00LL60JU8">http://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Spigen-Tou ... B00LL60JU8</a><!-- m --> It has a nice sturdy feel to it. It keeps the phone slim (as much as a case can). Adds a little bit of weight which is to be expected. I'll try and remember to update after a few weeks to see how it is doing durability wise. For $18 I think it is a good deal. I did gamble with amazon because it said it was used - open package. All of the Spigen cases on amazon say this. Turned out to just be an open package but was inspected/certified by amazon warehouse.
Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 11-15-2014 I loved my spigen case for my s5 but they don't make one for the wireless charging backplate so I'm forced to use one of those soft case things from some other company. there's only two choices that fit the qi cover |
