Been way too long since ive been doing HPDEs. Had a shit-eating grin after my third session. Got into my groove and had a lot of fun. Maybe there is something to these rwd underpowered bavarian machines :twisted:

I rode with Enrique, an instructor, in his blue Corvette (ZR1 I think). FUN.

Colin got a ride with the guy who drives the blue Z4M coupe, number 65, in HPDE 3. Same guy gave me my first ride-along last year; he's super nice and a pretty good driver.

Not sure about anyone else, but we definitely had a good day!

A couple laps of in-car. Did some good things, did some bad things all pointed out by the instructor. And this is evidence that I was in fact the first to take the checker in this session. jus sayin' :wink:

I had a great time. I am a little bummed that I missed half of the second session and the third session on Sat. I felt like I was really coming into it in the second session on Sun. We tried a few different lines through a couple corners which was fun and I finally started to trust the throttle to plant the car, especially in 3, 4, and 10. I had terrible understeer through 1 and 5-6 though. I really wish I had more time to work on getting into 7 then rolling into the throttle out of it into 8 and 9, probably my favorite section to get right.

My instructor was great and we did more than just try to learn the line. I got loose a few times but he said he felt confident that I was ahead of it and reading the car well so we tried some different things to see how the car would react. I learned a lot more about the dynamics of my car in the process. And just something I noticed, if your instructor is pushing on his imaginary pedal, hard, with both feet, you should start braking as well. :oops:

I made it home with the engine running, most of the cylinders anyway. Developed a miss under acceleration in the last session so I need to check that out. I tried to be nice to it, maybe saw 6K a couple times between 9 and 10, I stayed in third longer if I was expecting a point-by there to hopefully get it done quickly.

steve, nice work. your 2nd time through 3 was much better than the 1st... wish the video hadn't broken up on the 3rd lap. oh well. doesn't make me want to get on track, but does make me want to instruct again... weird.

for the record, i f'ing love T3. in an underpowered fwd you'd have to be a complete asshole to screw anything up there... turn and MASH IT.

You kept calling an E36 M3 a "momentum car" all weekend which is probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time. Mike actually came out to the track in his track car and brought a delicious pie for everyone which was ridiculous but that still pales in comparison to the ridiculousness of the statement that an E36 M3 is a momentum car. :bootyshake:

Anyhow, the weather was just about as perfect as could be after Sat morning. Karting was a blast, the long sessions were a lot of fun, and it was good to see a lot of MMers come out to the track. I'm glad some of the newer MMers were able to get a hyperdrive session out there, others were able to get rides and Steve was able to get that vette out there thanks to his awesome DIY header wrench. God I love the sound of a V8 with aggressive cams. Almost as good as Goodspeed's 1.8L with an intake... It was a good weekend to wrap up the season for me. Time to fix some issues on the Miata, clean her up and put her on the market. Anyone interested?

An E36 M3 is absolutely a "momentum car" compared to something like a Viper or a C6 Z06. Typical measurement is how much time you spend per lap with the right foot pinned to the floor. Which, I assure you, is done plenty in just about any decently set up E36 M3. Feathering the throttle? Not in the vocabulary, if you want to go fast anyway. :wink:

Plus, there's no such thing as a "momentum car" really, it's an instructor buzzword for students with Miatas and whatnot, used to make the driver think about carrying as much speed into and out of a corner as possible. By definition ALL track cars are momentum cars. :twisted:

okay sure, technically every car is a "momentum car" but saying that an E36 M3 is a momentum car to a Miata driver is like saying "ow, I stubbed my toe so it hurts to walk" to a parapalegic.

ah whatever, I know what your plans are for after the miata so Tongue. I came from a big pig on hoosiers with plenty of power, something with literally almost half the power is definitely weird to me. Really made me focus on making sure to set up to get exit speed so I could get past the corvettes, if I didnt get it right, they would back off the throttle and it still would take me forever to get past them in the m3. I was used to the gsx being able to take the vettes on the straights and turns. Anyway enough excuses, theres a reason im in HPDE 2 Tongue. I was definitely overcooking 5 and 3 consistently, and need to learn to get that under control, and also my transition from full braking to getting back in the throttle needs to be fixed. The m3 is definitely a good learners car and great for me, a big thanks goes to my instructor Scott Blair and of course the usual NASA crew!

I edited the video because I really wanted to be able to compare the line through 3. Here's the new one. Clean turn 3 on the last lap is at 3:49.

The difference is huge. In the last lap I made one steering input turn that put me on the inside curb and then pointed me right at the edge of the pinch in at the exit. I spent most of the day steering in several inches to the right of the curb and then steering back left at the exit.

Meang, what car were you in in group 1? The S2000, Evo, and some guy in an unassuming E46ish 3 series (NJ plates) were reallllly fast out there.
