oh... so you're making a second bike that does the exact same thing?

- Ginger - 02-12-2009

Yep!

- .RJ - 02-12-2009

Ginger is just a whore for anything that came out of the bicycling world in the late 90's.

...gonna party like its 1999....

- Ginger - 02-12-2009

Pretty much.

I'm on a kick for buying stuff that I really wanted when I was in high school (motorcycles, the Jeep, bicycles [I've got stories about both frames that I bought and the wheelset], guitars, etc.). The nice thing about this kind of delayed gratification is that if I get the exact thing I wanted back then, it doesn't cost very much now.

Besides, it's cheaper than crack.

Colnago build continued here:

Well, I moved the Kestrel fork over to this bike, along with my ergo bend Modolo bars from last decade, and put on the new Helium wheels. It's also getting the Dura-Ace shifters (not pictured). If I find a cheap old Shimano seat post (and the carbon will be free for the Colnago), it will be totally period. Nobody really cares about that but me, though.

So here's a new picture:

*ninja edit* and I put my Look pedals on it. The lighter Dura-Ace pedals are going on the Colnago.

Alright, so, if I could have built a nice bike when I started racing way back in the day, this is the bike I would have built:

It's full Dura-Ace 7700, Mavic Helium wheels, Kestrel EMS Pro carbon fork, Look PP-396 pedals, and some oh-so-late-90's Ergo bend bars (in 26.0 clamp). The seat post is nothing special, though, it's just something Bianchi put their label on and I put an Ohlins sticker over it. These days it's nothing special, but it's cool in my head.

And a tribute to the Serotta I cannibalized to make this thing, the original EA50 stem and Kestrel fork:

Campy Record 10 shifters have always represented the pinnacle of awesome to me (don't anybody remind me that they released Record 11 at the end of last season)... but using them always meant switching to a completely new component group, right down to new wheels: not cheap.

I was digging around the intertoobs, though, and found this awesome metalpulleythingamajig:

It alters the cable pull ratio to make the Campy 10 shifters work with Shimano 9 gear. Way cool. There are other versions for other combinations... but it's definitely the coolest $35 piece of metal I've ever owned.

Another view:

Shifters on:

They make a nice, clean installation, compared to their counterparts from other manufacturers:

Please, for the love of god, tell me you did not pay $300 for shifters.

- .RJ - 02-21-2009

He probably spent more.

- Ginger - 02-21-2009

I was going to say something, but really, don't troll this up. There's no reason to be a donkey.

- Mike - 02-21-2009

because in andrew's dreams, he can ride two bikes that do the same thing at the same time. it's awesome.

- Ginger - 02-21-2009

It's still cheaper than cars Wink

- Mike - 02-22-2009

quick! http://www.bonktown.com/?cmp_id=ODAL_RS ... ku=CPG0014

expires around 12:43.

- Apoc - 02-22-2009

Should spend some of that money on new carpet.

- Ginger - 03-08-2009

Since I updated the Colnago thread I figured that I would update this one as well, although not much has changed.

Since I got a new seatpost to use for the Colnago, I was able to put the carbon post back on this bicycle. The infinitely adjustable seat angle is nice to have, since I like my seats to be dead level, and it's also nice to have the zero-setback again... I'm just not tall enough to have any setback with this frame. I also procured a spare handlebar identical to the one on the Colnago, so that went on, as well. Lastly, somebody on Craig's List wanted to trade a 110mm Cinelli Groove stem for a 100mm of any brand. The Easton EA50 I had suited the bill, and I installed the Groove. As noted in my Colnago update, replacing the wet-noodle EA stem made a big improvement in performance.

I've got a few miles on the shifters/jtek-pulley combination and I've been impressed so far. I was worried that the combination would proove too finnicky to be very useful, but I'm happy to be wrong. Everything seems to shift accurately and quite crisply, and the tension-adjuster bosses haven't been relegated to decoration.

The frame still rides great, but it's given up a bit of stability in the transition from the EC90 fork to the Kestrel. Also, now that I've ridden the Colnago, I can't help but feel like I'm riding with weights tied to my ankles when I climb. I'm torn, but I' may be selling this bike, with Shimano shifters, since the Colnago has lived up to my expectations.

I mean, I can't realistically start a third project until this one is gone, right?
