I go back and forth on both the Dinan badge and the pinstripe (or maybe just taking off the part of the pinstripe that swoops around the back) - the M5 badge is gonna stay, though. The Dinan badge may write a check that the car can't cash; it's not that much different from a stock car. I'd see that on another car and immediately think it had a blower, and if it didn't, I'd think the badge was ridiculous. Overall, I really like the clean look of an M5 without those things, but a lot of work went into doing/getting them. Besides, what would differentiate my car from a standard M5 that belongs to say, a peasant? Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - davej - 11-05-2015 off topic, but we're good at that, have you seen 02's stock the last few months? this one on BaT threw me off, yeah, it's a clean, pretty stock roundie, but not a tii or anything, nor does it have the normal desired upgrades. http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-bmw-2002-2/ I wouldn't have put it over $8-9k, but I a cheap old bastard. could it be market speculators trying to stash a clean example? Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Senor_Taylor - 11-05-2015 Sounds like you've made a good investment, Dave. MMs 02 is a far cry from the cherryness of that one, Taylor Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Beej - 11-05-2015 Comma is formal/proper in my book. As much as I like 2002's and want to have one at some point, I have to admit I don't have a clue what they go for. Clean, rust free roundie...$17k doesn't surprise me too much, even if I can't see myself paying it. However, S14 plz. Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Senor_Taylor - 11-05-2015 I like how we all know each other because we went to college, yet we have issues over proper grammar. Miserable job. Luckily, someone out there made metal replacements: ![]() M3 on the left, M5 on the right: ![]() And for giggles, comparison to 2014 halogens on the Jeep: ![]() I'm not sure those photos are a very good comparison, as I'm pretty sure the Jeep has better light output in general. Interesting nonetheless. Anyway, the M5 is much better to drive at night now. Can't wait to do this shit job again when the passenger side lets go. And wee, horsepower! Daddy gets both garage spots full time while Mommy is on maternity leave.
Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - SlimKlim - 12-02-2015 I don't get how they're getting away with selling luxury-ish vehicles without HIDs as standard equipment now. My 2009 GTI had auto-leveling bi-xenons as standard equipment. I had to pay an extra grand to get them on the '15. They are adaptive, and as far as I can tell the high beams harness the power of the sun itself, but still. Le sigh Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Beej - 01-15-2016 Replaced the driver's puddle light and trunk light assemblies, both of which broke when I tried to replace the bulbs. Also swapped in new motor and trans mounts. One motor mount looked not great and the transmission mounts were pretty squished, but didn’t really notice much of a difference afterwards. ![]() And apparently there's a PS leak on that black driver's side mount there. I also replaced the Redline MTF that was in there with the OE MTF LT-2 stuff, which means the garage floor got a nice cleaning, too. Car shifted just fine before, very occasionally needing an extra nudge to get out of a gear (like it happened a handful of times). Hasn’t happened since, so maybe it likes the OE fluid more. So…car is running like a champ and there aren’t any shifting issues. However, if one were to entertain my imaginative automotive-noise-paranoia…troubleshooting a noise over the internet is always fun. There’s a slight “flutter” type noise that’s consistent with engine speed in any gear except 5th (not there in neutral or with the clutch in) - both acceleration and deceleration, not constant cruising. It’s very light - if it happened in 5th, I wouldn’t think anything of it, and it’d just seem like a normal sound for the car. 5th is noticeably quieter and it'd be nice if all gears were like that. I took the shift boots (both leather and the rubber chassis one, it's surprising how much noise/heat they block out) to get a better listen. Even took some video but don't really feel like editing it together at the moment. Oh and it doesn't really happen with the rear wheels in the air - so it needs the resistance of the road. Anyway, I know next to nothing about transmissions and hope to keep it that way. Since 5th is the 1:1 gear, is it possible that it goes straight through and 1,2,3,4,6 are on a different shaft (google turned up the term “layshaft”) that maybe rattles a bit more? Funny thing is that I don’t know if the car did it when I got it. I only noticed after not driving the car for a couple weeks (this was months ago) and taking it out on a cold morning with the windows up. Before that, I very well may have had the windows down 90% of the time and wouldn’t have heard it. Hasn't gotten louder, hasn't gotten worse. Car drives fine and I don’t plan on doing anything about it…just sorta interesting. Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - SlimKlim - 01-15-2016 I haven't heard of anything like that, my first thought was something with the TOB but that shouldn't be affected by which gear it's in. What car are you driving most often? Going from the brand new VW to the old BMW has me convinced the car is making new noises just about every time, but I'm pretty sure it's just because I get used to the near-silence of the new car. Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - RawrImAMonster - 01-15-2016 I would assume it's because 5th is the direct drive gear in that transmission, but it's hard to tell without hearing it; |
